NEWPORT County AFC started their preparations for the League Two season with a 4-1 win at Undy AFC.

The Exiles beat their hosts from Ardal SE thanks to goals by winger Michael Spellman in the first half and forwards Courtney Baker-Richardson, Kiban Rai and Luke Jephcott after the break.

County are building towards their August 10 opener at Cheltenham at enjoyed a first hit-out of the summer at the Causeway.

The Exiles took the lead when Spellman, one of ten summer signings, struck from a cross by fellow new boy Joe Thomas.

It was 1-0 at the break and County doubled their advantage just past the hour through Baker-Richardson, back for a second spell at Rodney Parade.

That was swiftly followed by efforts by Rai and Jephcott before Undy had the final say from the penalty spot, Harris Thomas getting on the scoresheet.

County continue to ramp up their preparations for the League Two campaign with a trip to Pontypridd, of Cymru South, on Tuesday before facing Barry Town United of Cymru Premier on Saturday.

That is followed by three more away games just over the border – Bristol City (behind closed doors), Kidderminster and Hereford.
