TRETHOMAS Bluebirds are the last Gwent team standing after the first round of the Nathaniel MG Cup.

The Bluebirds, Ardal South East champions, edged a cracker at Cymru South rivals Cwmbran Celtic 3-2.

Levi Rees put the visitors in front after eight minutes but Celtic were back on level terms through the prolific Alex Bonthron on 25, then hit the front thanks to Andrew Larcombe.

However, Leon Thomas scored five minutes after the restart and then Will Bevan struck the winner approaching the hour.

Trethomas will now host the winners of the tie between Baglan Dragons and Swansea City’s youngsters.

Newport City travelled west to Llantwit Major but lost 2-0 with Matty Kimmins and Nathan Renfree on the scoresheet for the hosts.

Newport County AFC’s academy were entered into the competition’s northern section as a wildcard.

The youngsters travelled to Llandudno Town but were given a lesson by the seniors, who took the spoils 3-0 at Maesdu Park.

The north Walians led 1-0 at the break thanks to a strike by Adam Stephens then Nelson Sanca, the teenage defender who made his League Two debut in the run-in last season, put into his own net.

Stephens scored again to earn Llandudno a second-round meeting with Guilsfield.

The Cymru South contingent get their seasons under way next weekend when Newport City host Ammanford on Friday and then on Saturday Celtic entertain Cambrian United and Trethomas head to Llantwit.
