WALES Under-21s head coach Matty Jones has signed a two-year contract extension through to 2028.
The international midfielder, who was appointing in September 2022, has overseen the 2025 UEFA U21 EURO qualifying campaign with the Welsh youngsters having an opportunity to at least earn a play-off spot heading into their last two fixtures.
They sit second in Group I having earned three wins and two draws, with their only defeat coming against top seeds and current group leaders Denmark.
Jones has given 31 players debuts since his first game at the helm against Austria in September 2022 and Joe Low, Charlie Savage, Fin Stevens, Charlie Crew and Lewis Koumas have gone on to make their senior debuts.
The head coach said: “It’s an honour as U21 head coach to have received recognition with a contract extension, however it’s been a collective effort from all the staff who have provided the very best for our players to perform and execute throughout the campaign.
“The success of the team has evolved through healthy conflict with players who have shown a great endeavour to learn and better each other.
“There have been moments of individual excellence as well as grit and determination to get us where we are in the qualification group and that needs to continue.
“The most complex part has been the management of players throughout the age groups, inspiring players to achieve their goals of stepping into the first team but also managing their ambitions and to get the best from them at all levels.
“There has been a great unity between age groups, clear communication amongst staff and players and there has been no better feeling for myself when those individuals have been rewarded with opportunities, especially making their senior debuts.”
Wales Wales travel to Iceland on September 10 before finishing their qualification campaign against Czech Republic at Rodney Parade on October 11.
