NEWPORT County AFC boss Nelson Jardim has vowed to do whatever it takes to bring the best out of his players after ditching his favoured back four for wing-backs in the stunning win against Doncaster.

The Exiles got their League Two campaign up and running on Saturday with a superb 3-1 victory against a Rovers side tipped to push for promotion after making the play-offs last season.

Donny led 1-0 at the break but County got Rodney Parade rocking with a stunning second-half turnaround that featured first goals for the club by Bobby Kamwa, Kai Whitmore and Matt Baker.

Jardim has been given the task of developing a new possession-based style in Newport and the former Swansea coach favours a 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation to achieve that.

He played those systems throughout pre-season and in the defeats to Cheltenham and Leyton Orient but then mixed it up against Doncaster.

County fielded a central defence of Baker, James Clarke and Ciaran Brennan and then got width from Shane McLoughlin and Anthony Glennon, two players more suited to being wing-backs.

“We are always assessing with the players that we have got available. We had a couple of injuries so I just felt that this would be the best shape and the boys did well,” said Jardim, with forwards Michael Spellman and Oliver Greaves expected to be fit to be considered to face Accrington on Saturday.

“One of the jobs of any coach is to make sure the players can perform to their best, I felt that was the right way against Doncaster.

“I just want to make sure we enjoy our football and play well, so I am not afraid to do whatever is needed for the players to enjoy it, play well and for the team build on the style we want to play.

“I will do whatever it takes to make sure follow the path we should be on.”

After admitting his concerns at the defending against Cheltenham and Orient, Jardim was pleased by the way that County held firm at 3-1 up to avoid a nervy finale despite late Doncaster desperation.

“We have been talking and working with the players just to make sure we get the basics right,” said Jardim.

“We were good at that and knew that Doncaster when losing would put a lot of pressure on us but the boys did well.”

County now prepare for another big home game on Saturday when they host an Accrington side who were denied victory deep in added time by Harrogate in a 3-3 draw.

There is no chance of the Exiles boss resting on his laurels after stunning a top team.

“The challenge is to do the same and a little bit more,” said Jardim. “We are looking for a bit more quality, that’s the objective.”

County hope to have influential midfielder Bryn Morris, who was doing pre-match sprints on the pitch before Doncaster, back in the selection mix after he missed the start of the season with tendonitis.

Winger Spellman and forward Greaves, who scored on his EFL debut at Cheltenham, are also set to return this week after leg injuries.
