BOBBY Kamwa idolised Raphinha while learning his trade at Leeds and the livewire Newport County AFC winger intends to show a bit of that Barcelona and Brazil magic to get back to where he feels he belongs.

The 24-year-old opened his Exiles account on Saturday – although it’s not yet official.

He got County back on level terms in Saturday’s 3-1 League Two win against Doncaster Rovers at Rodney Parade when he cut in from the left and curled a cross/shot into the far post.

Courtney Baker-Richardson made a play for the ball and was announced as the scorer but it was Kamwa’s goal.

The team celebrated with the winger in the corner and the striker, with unusual honesty for a forward, admitted post-match that he didn’t glance it in.

Nonetheless, Baker-Richardson is the man that is currently listed as the goalscorer on the EFL’s website and all the statistic pages.

County have informed the league and the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) that it is Kamwa’s goal and are waiting for a dubious goals panel to make their ruling.

However, the winger will hope that he gets the official verdict to show that he has end product with a goal rather than an assist.

Kamwa has made a hugely impressive start to life in Newport after leaving Burton Albion at the end of last season for a fresh challenge.

The attacker wants regular football to get back to the levels that saw him earn a professional contract with Leeds after coming through the academy.

He has already played wide in a 4-3-3 and still mainly operated down the left despite the change to wing-backs against Doncaster.

Kamwa was a menace throughout and should have levelled in the first half before his goal (TBC) swiftly after the restart.

He then won the ball back for Kai Whitmore to slam in and make it 2-1 before helping to relieve pressure when the clock was being killed with his pace, tricker and strength in holding possession.

The early signs are that County could have a gem and that shouldn’t come as a surprise given his football education.

“I was at Leeds for nine years and came through the academy with great training facilities,” said Kamwa.

“I learnt my trade there and now I am on my journey to get back to where I feel that I should be.

“I was in a group with Crysencio Summerville, Sam Greenwood, Joe Gelhardt, Nohan Kenneh and a lot more boys – it was a great academy and it created a lot of good players.

“When I was there and trained with the first team I looked up to the likes of Raphinha and he has gone on to do great things at Barcelona right now.

“There were the likes of Kalvin Phillips who came through the academy at Leeds, so we had great role models.”

A first team breakthrough at Leeds didn’t come and, after a loan spell at Dunfermline, Kamwa headed to Burton to take the next step of his professional career.

He made 47 appearances for the Brewers but left after they avoided League One relegation last season.

“People have to move on, that’s what I chose to do and I am on a path now to strive for better,” said Kamwa, who did pre-season with a personal trainer before signing for County.

“The attraction here was the owner, the manager and the project they have, how they see the club moving forward.

“It’s exciting, they are trying to renew everything and I have a feeling that there is going to be some good happening at this place so I am happy to be here.

“The manager is trying to instil a style of football that a lot of teams don’t play in this league and we are still gelling, but then we click it will be something different. We are going in the right direction.”

Kamwa will be to the fore when Nelson Jardim’s side bid to back up their excellent win against Doncaster by beating Accrington on Saturday.

Stanley have started with a 4-1 loss at Donny and then a 3-3 draw at Harrogate, when they conceded an equaliser at the death.
