PONTYPOOL legend Leighton Jones has stepped down as head coach after eight years at the helm.

The former captain and hooker has been calling the shots at Pooler since 2016 but has resigned just one game into the Super Rygbi Cymru campaign.

The 46-year-old, son of club legend Steve ‘Junna’ Jones, cited “numerous contributing factors” that meant he was unable to continue in the role.

“This decision was not made lightly, and I want to express my gratitude to everyone I’ve worked with during my time in the role,” he said.

“It’s been hugely rewarding to represent this club, that means so much to me. I am born and bred Pontypool and this club will always be a huge part of me.

“I’ve always demanded honesty from everyone at the club and it’s only right that I give the same honesty back to the club with this decision to step down.

“There is some great talent in the management team and playing group and I know they will continue the good work here and drive us forward.”

Jones played 172 times for Pooler and returned to the club as a coach in 2013 before taking the top job in 2016.

He led the club to the Championship title in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2023, eventually securing a return to the top flight along with winning the Championship Cup at Principality Stadium.

They enjoyed a solid first season back in the Premiership and are now looking to push on in the revamped, 10-team SRC.

Owner Peter Jeffreys said: “I want to thank Leighton for his immense contribution over the past decade. He has epitomised everything that Pontypool RFC stands for.

“His dedication, passion, commitment and honesty have truly embodied the spirit of the club and I’m incredibly grateful for his contribution. I truly hope we see Leighton at the club in future, as he’ll always be welcome.”

Backs coach Tom Hancock was in charge for the televised SRC opener against Llandovery last week when Jones was absent for the narrow 21-18 defeat to the champions.

The former fly-half, who returned to the club from the Drovers this summer after landing a job with the Dragons academy, will continue as boss for Saturday’s trip to Bridgend.
