WHEN Kyle Hudlin signed on transfer deadline day he became the 17th arrival in a summer of change for Newport County AFC.

The jury is out on the business that was spearheaded by owner Huw Jenkins, who has put an emphasis on youth and potential.

The Exiles are lacking experience and plenty of seasoned campaigners headed for the exit to make way for the new recruits.

The leavers have had mixed results at their new clubs in the opening months of the season, with only a few so far producing the goods to suggest that County made a mistake…

WILL EVANS (Mansfield)

Before getting into the other leavers, first a player who was reluctantly let go for £200,000 when entering the final year of his contract.

The hard-working forward has stepped up to League One and has made nine appearances in all competitions for the Stags, seven of them starts.

Got off the mark for his new club with a goal against Burton Albion and has helped Nigel Clough's men make a solid start.

Appearances: 9. Goals: 1.

SCOT BENNETT (Cheltenham)

The County legend was surprisingly only given a low contract offer and left to be reunited with Michael Flynn in Cheltenham.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a win against his former side on opening weekend and has shown that he still has plenty to offer.

The defender/midfielder has started all seven of the Robin’s League Two fixtures, completing the 90 minutes six times.

Appearances: 7.

RYAN DELANEY (Swindon)

The captain and centre-back was in talks with County over a fresh deal but instead made the short trip to Swindon.

The Irishman suffered a season-ending knee injury in February and was on the comeback trail at the start of his career in Wiltshire.

Has been limited to a pair of appearances off the bench, one in the EFL Trophy and the other in League Two at the start of September.

Appearances: 2.

HARRY CHARSLEY (Oldham)

The midfielder was another to leave despite contract talks, opting to return to his native north west of England and drop down to the National League with Oldham.

The 27-year-old made a strong start to the campaign with goals against Braintree and Wealdstone but, after his County career was frequently hindered by niggles, suffered a groin injury on September 7 and is yet to return to action.

Appearances: 7. Goals: 2.

OMAR BOGLE (Crewe)

Was released by County and eventually signed a two-year contract with League Two rivals Crewe Alexandra.

Could return to Rodney Parade this weekend but is yet to really get going with the Railwaymen due to injury.

Scored in the EFL Trophy but made the last of his three outings on September 7.

Appearances: 3. Goals: 1.

JOE DAY (Cheltenham)

The goalkeeper followed Bennett to Cheltenham to be a back-up to Newport-born Owen Evans while starting his coaching career.

Did get the nod on his return to Rodney Parade in the EFL Trophy and it was a successful one, with the visitors winning 2-1. The 34-year-old also started the Carabao Cup defeat at Championship Plymouth.

Appearances: 2.

OFFRANDE ZANZALA (AFC Fylde)

The striker also dropped down to the National League after agreeing a one-year contract with Fylde.

The 27-year-old has made 10 appearances, seven as a substitute, but is yet to get off the mark for his new club, who are one above the relegation zone.

Appearances: 10.

JAMES WAITE (Weston-super-Mare)

The 25-year-old returned to Weston, where he had previously played on loan while with Cardiff, while launching a coaching business.

Sadly, the attacking midfielder faces a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a broken leg and ankle damage against Chelmsford in National League South.

Appearances: 4.

HARRISON BRIGHT (Barry Town United)

The academy graduate initially signed for National League South Salisbury but swiftly made the move to the Cymru Premier.

The 20-year-old from Blaenavon returned to Barry, where he had previously played on loan, and has so far made eight appearances.

Appearances: 8.

SAM BOWEN (Solihull Moors)

The midfielder spent last season on loan at Wealdstone and stayed in the National League with beaten play-off finalists Solihull Moors.

Has featured prominently for the West Midlands side, making 11 appearances and scoring one goal against Southend.

Appearances: 11.

DECLAN DRYSDALE (Tranmere)

The central defender from Birkenhead earned a one-year deal with his hometown club thanks to a successful trial.

Drysdale was plagued by injury at County and Tranmere boss Nigel Adkins revealed on the eve of the season that he would miss the opening months of the campaign.

Appearances: 0.

JONNY MAXTED (Brackley Town)

The goalkeeper, who made six appearances with the Exiles, signed up with National League North Brackley.

After being Nick Townsend’s deputy, the experienced stopper is a starter again and has made nine appearances for the Northamptonshire side, who sit in mid-table.
