NELSON Jardim says novice goalkeeper Jacob Carney has the full support of Newport County AFC after his costly blunder in the 1-0 defeat at Harrogate.

The Exiles suffered another League Two defeat on their travels after a low-quality clash at Wetherby Road.

The game was ultimately decided by Carney failing to claim a routine cross in the 40th minute that allowed Toby Sims to nod in at the far post.

The 23-year-old stopper was playing because Nick Townsend is away on international duty with Antigua and Barbuda but endured a League Two debut to forget.

“Jacob’s got my full support and the support of the whole squad,” said head coach Jardim “It's a strong dressing room and we are all supportive.

“This is part of the process as a young team and for him as a young goalkeeper. He has had a taste of this level and he works hard every day, so we expect the best for him.

“This is a learning curve and he has the support of everyone, he is a good keeper and our job is to make sure he improves, feels confident and comfortable.”

County, who return to Rodney Parade to face Chesterfield on Friday, failed to create any clear chances in drab encounter in Harrogate.

However, Jardim felt his side deserved to at least earn a share of the spoils.

"It's a disappointing result but we go back to work on Monday and keep going,” said the boss, after the Exiles slipped to 13th in the table.

"We showed that we were in control for most of the time and I guess it's disappointing to not have at least a point.

“There were not too many goal-scoring chances but that was at both ends and one little detail decided the game.”

County have now lost five of six away games in League Two with their solitary success a backs-to-the wall win at struggling Morecambe.

“When you look at the youth of the team, that is a reason, but you can only focus on the performance side of things,” said Jardim.

“We’ll keep working hard and I’m sure results will come. I thought a draw would have been a fair result but football isn’t always fair.”

County will hope to have Townsend and defender Matt Baker, who is on Wales Under-21s duty, back for Chesterfield on Friday, although their preparation time will be limited because they both play on Tuesday.
