IT’S the battle of the Bluebirds in the second round of the Welsh Cup on Saturday when Cymru South pace-setters Trethomas attempt to show their quality at Cymru Premier Haverfordwest.

The top-tier teams have entered the competition in the race to Rodney Parade, with the men’s and women’s finals once again being held in Newport at the end of April and start of May.

Trethomas are going great guns after earning promotion as Ardal South East champions and moved back to the top of Cymru South when they won a thriller with Afan Lido 3-2 last weekend, with rivals Cambrian United slipping to a 4-1 loss at Baglan Dragons.

Mark Dunford’s side, who won 1-0 at Taffs Well in round one, now go up against a Haverfordwest side who have started the season superbly to sit second in the Cymru Premier.

Trethomas played top-level opposition last month when beaten 4-1 by Barry Town United in Ystrad Mynach in the Nathaniel MG Cup.

New Inn of the Gwent Premier will also be taking on a top-flight side when they welcome Briton Ferry Llansawel to Woodfield Road.

Newport Corinthians, of Ardal SE, have landed a fixture at Cymru South Trefelin where they could go up against Swansea legend Lee Trundle and former Wales international Shaun MacDonald.

Monmouth Town stunned Newport City 2-0 in the first round of the tournament and their reward for that upset is a home tie against Gwent Premier rivals Pill, who progressed with a win at Chepstow.

Goytre are in action on Friday when they entertain Cardiff Draconians while Rogerstone head to the capital on Saturday to face Cardiff Bay Warriors.

There are six fixtures in Ardal South East with Canton trying to go level on points with leaders Treowen Stars when they travel to Undy.

The pace-setting side from Newbridge already have a game in hand and a three-point gap to the men from the capital.

Ardal SE fixtures: Blaenavon Blues v Treharris Athletic Western, Brecon Corries v Abergavenny Town, Chepstow Town v Abertillery Bluebirds, Risca United v Abercarn United, Tredegar Town v Croesyceiliog, Undy v Canton.
