THE Dragons have secured the return of popular prop Aki Seiuli on a short-term deal to help with their loosehead crisis.
The 31-year-old has returned to Rodney Parade until January, when he will head for Utah Warriors in Major League Rugby.
The Samoa international made 50 appearances for the Dragons over three seasons after arriving from Glasgow in 2021.
The Dragons have been forced to move in the market because of injuries to Rhodri Jones (knee), Josh Reynolds (leg) and up-and-comers Dylan Kelleher-Griffiths (ankle) and Jordan Morris (knee).
Rodrigo Martinez is the only fit contracted loosehead on the books with Cameron Jones on loan from the Ospreys for the rest of the first block of the United Rugby Championship.
The pair will share the action in Newport against Benetton on Saturday with Seiuli registered in case of emergency after arriving in south Wales on Friday.
“We’re delighted to bring Aki back on a deal that will run into the new year,” said head coach Dai Flanagan.
“Aki is an international prop who has vast experience in our competitions and who always performs to a very high standard.
“Aki is not just a great professional, he’s a positive character who knows our environment and will fit seamlessly into what we are building.
“I’m sure our fans will also be pleased to see him return and give him a fantastic reception when he runs back out in our colours."
Seiuli took his tally of Samoa caps to nine over the summer and will return to Rodney Parade to cover for Rhodri Jones before heading for Utah.
“I’m excited to get back with Dragons and looking forward to seeing everyone and working hard for an opportunity to get back out on the field,” said Seiuli.
“I’ve been keeping a close eye on Dragons and have been impressed by the performances the team have put in so far this season.
“I’m really happy to be back to help the lads wherever I can, on and off the field, and hopefully we can get work together to get some great results.”
