MATT Baker has scored with every shot this season and the goalscoring Newport County AFC defender aims to keep chipping in.

The Wales Under-21s international opened the scoring for the Exiles in their 2-0 win at Gillingham on Tuesday evening.

His crisp volley from an Anthony Glennon free-kick was his third strike of the campaign – and according to whoscored.com the centre-back/right-back has only had three shots.

Baker scored his first professional goal against Doncaster in his 59th appearance for County, then struck again versus Crewe.

The defender is following in the footsteps of previous mentor Mickey Demetriou in racking up the goals and is keen to keep helping out.

“The first two seasons I did not have one goal," said Baker, who signed a permanent deal with the club this summer after two previous loan spells at Rodney Parade.

"I said to myself I need to get on the score sheet more. Now three goals in eight league games this season is good going. I want to keep it up and keep scoring for the team.”

Baker sat out last Friday’s defeat to Chesterfield at Rodney Parade because of his exertions on international duty with the Wales youngsters.

He returned at right-back to help County keep a clean sheet, digging deep under serious pressure in the second half after going into the break two goals up.

“We had to stick in the game until the final whistle. It was tough at times but I thought we stood up to the challenge very well,” said Baker.

“Defensively, we need to show that performance every week. We know we are capable of those performances and if we can show that every game then we’ll win games most weeks.

“Gillingham is a tough place to go, especially in midweek. I don’t think just the back four needs to take credit for that win, but the whole team too. It was a real team effort.

"We deserved it too. We can look back and be really proud of that performance because it’s a big win after a big effort from everyone.”

County now attempt to back that up against a Fleetwood side who were frustrated to lose 1-0 at home to Crewe in midweek after bossing the game but conceding a late penalty.
