THE Dragons should have no qualms about bringing in speedster Lloyd Lewis for the United Rugby Championship, believes his Newport boss Ty Morris.

The winger will return to Black and Ambers action with a mouth-watering Super Rygbi Cymru derby at Ebbw Vale on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm).

It comes after he caught the eye playing for the Dragons in their double development fixture success against the Scarlets and Ospreys.

Lewis, a rapid Wales sevens international, scored a double in Newport and then produced an acrobatic finish at St Helen’s.

The 28-year-old from Cwmbran has scored 31 tries in 39 games for the Black and Ambers after also being prolific for Pontypool.

“Lloyd has been one of the best wingers in our league for a while,” said Morris. “He has that sprinkling of stardust, acceleration and top-end speed that is pro level.

“He has a lot of experience from Wales Sevens when he played in some big tournaments and probably has some unfinished business.

“Training in that full-time environment gave him an opportunity to show what he can do and I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season brings for him, potentially at that pro level.”

The Dragons used Wales winger Rio Dyer and the Rosser brothers, Jared and Ewan, out wide in the first block of the URC.

Stalwart Ashton Hewitt is closing in on a return after ruptured knee ligaments while Oli Andrew is poised for a comeback for Newport from a hamstring injury in the coming weeks, potentially at Ebbw.

Harry Rees-Weldon, who has been learning the ropes with the Steelmen in the Premiership and SRC, also showed his potential in the development fixtures.

Lewis’ club boss believes his winger, who combines playing with being a television presenter, musician and rugby pundit, can shine at professional level if he is able to link up with the senior squad in Ystrad Mynach.

“He has gone so well that he may be considered as that fourth or fifth option and the Dragons shouldn’t have any worries about bringing Lloyd in, but the key would be training full-time,” said Morris.

“There is more to it these days that just bringing in a player with X-factor, they have to play to the policies. If Lloyd can train full-time and there are one or two injuries then you never know.”

Lewis will aim to keep knocking on the door by shining for a Newport side aiming to go one better than last season by becoming the first SRC champions.

The Black and Ambers ended the first block with a 62-7 hammering of RGC at Spytty Park, responding to a rare double defeat to Llandovery and Pontypool.

Now they face an Ebbw Vale side who have started impressively after being hammered in Newport in the Premiership semi-finals last season.

The Steelmen won six from seven in the first block and will defend the Super Rygbi Cymru Shield that they won at Llandovery.

“I think that Ebbw Vale have improved and are a bit more expansive, running some very nice, direct, straight lines off their 9,” said Morris.

“However, their strengths remain around their set piece, maul and close-quarters game so it will be a really good test for our forwards.

“It will be a tough one and the conditions might suit them more than us, but we are looking forward to getting back to it.

“You don’t quite get that intensity that you want in training until it’s leading up to a game and things have been good this week.”

Pontypool hunt a third win on the spin when they return to action with a home encounter against Aberavon (kick-off 1.30pm).

Pooler edged out Newport then hammered Swansea at St Helen’s and will be keen to get the second block off to a successful start ahead of a tough trip to Cardiff.

That fixture is a double-header at the Arms Park with the SRC game (2pm) followed by the Dragons taking on the Blue and Blacks in the URC (5.15pm).

Pooler have reached an agreement with Cardiff for tickets costing £17 for adults and £7 for under-16s rather than the full price on the day, email jamie.hallam@pontypoolrugby.co.uk for more information.

“Should you only wish to stay for the first fixture you will be able to claim a refund of the price difference which will be processed upon presentation of your match ticket, within 30 minutes of full time, at their ticket office,” reads a Pooler statement.
