GEOFFROY Bony has grabbed his chance for a short-term deal at Newport County AFC – and has now been challenged to show he deserved a longer stay.
The forward made his Exiles debut as a substitute at Notts County on Saturday, the day after the club confirmed he had been given a contract until the end of the season.
The 19-year-old has become the second Bony on County’s books with younger brother Orphee impressing for the under-18s.
The older sibling, who was with Swansea’s academy, made his senior debut at Meadow Lane with ‘Geoffroy B.’ on his back above his squad number 37.
His introduction was followed by a version of the Swans’ song for his dad Wilfried to the tune of Slade’s ‘Cum On Feel the Noiz’.
The hope is that Geoffroy, who was deployed down the left, will send the Amber Army wild, wild, wild in the coming months after earning a chance with a successful trial.
“Geoff has been working very hard, and shows how old I am getting when I heard the fans singing his dad’s song! That brought me very good memories,” said head coach Nelson Jardim, who worked at the Swans.
“It’s about progression for him and moving forward. His dad was a different player, he has learnt a lot from him and has good genes.
“He is a good boy, Wilfried has done a good job, and he has come full of energy. There are a lot of areas that he needs to build up, we all know that, but he has grabbed this chance with all his strength.
“You can see he can bring some extra pace to the front line but he is also a good footballer after his education [at Swansea]. He’s another option for us.”
While Ivory Coast international Wilfried was a physical striker whose goalscoring exploits earned a big-money move to Manchester City, Geoffroy is versatile.
His debut was down the left flank but he also showed good link-up play to go with his pace, with Jardim ready to deploy him in a variety of roles.
“He plays across the front and I’ve actually been testing him, playing him in different positions to get to know him better,” said the head coach.
“He could play as a striker, a false 9, right and left, because we have seen has good pace and energy.
“We will try to find out where he feels is his best position but sometimes it’s also about what the team needs with players able to fill whatever space they are needed in.”
County’s summer recruitment drive brought players in on two-year contracts but Bony’s deal runs until the end of the season.
The teenager, whose dad frequently trained with the Exiles to stay fit, has the opportunity to show he is worthy of a longer stay in Newport.
“We have a lot of players in that situation,” said Jardim. “We have to make sure that at the end of this season we are in a good position with a clear idea about the team and what type of players we have got so we can improve and push on.”
Bony will have to wait for his next chance with County having a rare weekend off because of their FA Cup loss to League One Peterborough.
They are next in action at AFC Wimbledon a week on Tuesday with that fixture followed by a key home encounter with struggling Carlisle.
