It’s been a bizarre week for us Team Calzaghe members.
Virtually everyone in the stable is currently training ahead of fights in the autumn, meaning we’ve all been working hard and putting in the hours.
However, someone has been missing.
That someone is short, loud, Italian and massively sadistic. Any guesses?
That someone is my dad Enzo, who finally took a well-deserved holiday this week, spending a few days in Sardinia.
The problem for us is that he will return full of energy and I think it’s fair to say next week is going to be extremely tough for all of us!
On the subject of training, I thought I would give an update on my schedule.
I have mainly focused on fitness work this week, road running – not fun in the rain – rather than much bag work, just as a precaution with the right wrist, which the doctors say is absolutely fine now.
Once dad is back I am sure I will step up the ring work and pad work, though things are going to be a little different this time.
In my preparation for the Bernard Hopkins fight, I didn’t use any outside sparring partners, as I had Nathan Cleverly, Enzo Maccarinelli and Gary Lockett, among others.
All of the guys will be sparring with me this time around, but we will pay outside guys to come in as well.
I want to have a really good mix of sparring and I intend to do more rounds than I did before the Hopkins fight.
I have said before that I intend to knock out Roy Jones at Madison Square Garden on November 8 and in order to do that, I want some sparring with some ‘like-for-likers’ rather than just battering my boys in the gym! Only kidding!
It will be useful to vary it up a bit this time around and we have discussed some people who we’ll be looking to bring in.
One guy raring to get to New York is Tony Doherty, who is set to fight on my bill.
He’s a cracking lad and a hugely underrated fighter. I think he’ll really impress the American audience and hopefully he’ll get some television coverage over there as well.
It saddens me that the Olympics are drawing to a close, it’s been a brilliant event and the Team GB guys and girls have been superb.
Our success has been fantastic to watch and it’s a great reward for how hard these athletes train and the dedication they have to their sports.
I particularly enjoy the athletics and while I was hoping our own Christian Malcolm could get a medal, watching Usain Bolt was simply amazing.
The other event I have really enjoyed in the past couple of days was the open water swimming.
I was gutted for Dave Davies, he was heroic in my opinion, but he just suffered at the end when he got disorientated and lost the ability to swim straight.
But I want to congratulate him here and all of the medal winners. I bet Sports Personality this year will be epic!
Finally, I am glad that football is back, however do we cope without it?
I am a Juventus fan, but I’d love to see Cardiff City and Newport County, my two local clubs, have a great season and get promoted, tough as it will be.
However, in terms of the Premier League, which is always on the television, I am now an armchair follower of Hull City.
I reckon life is more exciting in the Premier League at the bottom than the top, it’s another two horse race for the title in my opinion, between Man United and Chelsea.
However, the relegation scrap will be more exciting and because my girlfriend Jo-Emma is a Hull girl, I am backing the Tigers this season.
It’s great to see a club that wasn’t long ago in League Two make it to the Premier League and with a bit of luck maybe they can survive.
