DESPITE once again struggling to overcome limited opposition at home, Gareth Bale believes Wales can get a positive result in Germany.
The Tottenham left-back was one of the better performers in an unconvincing 2-0 win over Liechtenstein on Saturday, but Bale insists the team will be full of confidence going into Wednesday’s match in Mönchengladbach.
“We won the game and it’s another three points so we’re happy,” said the 19-year-old.
“The pitch cut up a lot and it wasn’t a nice surface but we got the win, which was the important thing.”
Bale claims the memory of last year’s 0-0 draw in Germany will inspire the team to reach similar heights this week.
“I was injured for that game but it’s given us a lot of confidence,” he said.
“There’s no reason why we can’t go there and get a good result again. There is no pressure on us, we’re the underdogs, and we just need to play our football.”
Bale believes the return of captain Craig Bellamy will also be an important factor, even though he became the third Wales player to miss a penalty in three matches on Saturday.
In his first competitive Wales appearance for a year, the West Ham striker saw his first-half spot kick saved, just as Jason Koumas did against Azerbaijan, and Bale himself in Russia last month.
“He’s our captain and a world- class player so it’s great to have him back and he was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet,” added Bale.
“Bellers said he wanted it. He scored one in training so we let him have it but it’s just one of those things that happen. We need to put one in soon.
“We’re not worried about it. If we get a penalty in Germany someone will step up, we’re all confident enough players to do it. I’ll put my hand up again.”
Bale also had a good luck message for the Wales under-21 team, who travel to Villa Park tomorrow hoping to overturn a 3-2 deficit in their European Championships play-off against England.
“They have every chance, there’s only one goal in it,” he said.
“Villa Park is a tough place to go to but there is no reason why they can’t get the result they need. It’s only 11 against 11 so good luck to them.”
