INSPIRATIONAL Newport Gwent Dragons captain Tom Willis warns English and French giants Bath and Toulouse against believing Group Five of the Heineken Cup is a two-horse race.

The Dragons top the pool on points difference after their 32-22 victory over Glasgow on Saturday while Toulouse edged their way to a dramatic last gasp 16-15 victory over Bath 24 hours later.

Bath have been left simmering after throwing away their chance of a memorable win and are already talking about a winner-takes-all clash against Toulouse at the Recreation Ground in January.

They seem to be dismissing the Dragons and Glasgow and already the West country media are writing off the Dragons on Sunday with headlines about slaying the Dragons and chasing a bonus point victory.

Bath skipper Michael Lipman said: “We’re looking forward to Toulouse coming down to the Rec and playing us there. We’ve got to concentrate on Gwent first and that’s the only thing in our minds for now. That’s our next target, and hopefully we’ll get a bonus point win.”

But Willis isn’t worried his team have been dismissed. “If expectations are low that’s fine by us. If Bath and Toulouse think it’s a two-team group that’s fairly presumptuous though if you were a betting man you’d probably say that’s right,” he said.

“They’ve got a proud record and a strong squad, but it’s an opportunity for us to fly into one of the hot spots and handle some pressure. We’ve got belief and morale is high, so we’ve got to have trust in what we’re trying to do.”

Willis got his teammates into a huddle on the pitch after they had beaten Glasgow, explaining: “I’ve been doing it every time regardless of the result. I get them into a huddle which keeps morale pretty high.”

He will catch up with the Bath-Toulouse game this week, having watched only the Leicester-Ospreys game on Sunday. “It was pretty brutal, particularly the way the Leicester pack went about their work,” he said. “The Heineken Cup is a fantastic competition with the quality of player in each team high.”

Coach Paul Turner names the same 28-man squad as for the Glasgow game, but may make changes in the back row and centre where he has plenty of options, though it looks as though props Adam Black and Rhys Thomas and locks Adam Jones and Luke Charteris are going to have to continue shouldering a heavy burden.

Four props - Hugh Gustafson, Jamie Corsi, Lee Harrison and Gethin Robinson are injured, meaning Aaron Coundley, 19, is the only cover.
