BATH are overwhelming favourites for Sunday’s Heineken Cup clash against Newport Gwent Dragons, but all the pressure will be on them, insists Dragons wing Gareth Wyatt.
Fresh from his two-try performance against Glasgow, Wyatt, who made a delayed start to the season after a minor shoulder operation, believes the Dragons have got nothing to lose at the Recreation Ground.
After Bath ran French aces Toulouse so close last Sunday most are expecting them to run riot against the Dragons even if they have a four-game winning sequence behind them.
Not so Wyatt who says, “The pressure is on Bath. They know if they lose the chances are that they are out of the Heineken Cup. We’re going in as the underdogs, but we’ve prepared as well as we can and we are quietly confident.
“We’re under no illusions about the task ahead of us. We raised the standard against Glasgow last week and we’re going up another level again at Bath and looking at our fixture list we’ve got a run of away games now.
“It’s going to be tough, but it’s going to be an exciting challenge and if we move forward as a squad we’ve got to be confident.
“It’s pleasing for me to be back playing again and it’s nice that we gelled against Glasgow and I scored a couple of tries, but they came from the hard work that went on inside me.”
Wyatt believes the opening few games of the season, which the Dragons lost, gave a false impression of their capabilities.
“I watched the first couple of game and felt that they were there for the taking, but we couldn’t finish either Glasgow or the Scarlets off. The boys were comfortable going in at half-time in both games, but they weren’t able to finish the job,” he said.
“We had still been building, but the Munster game took that away and we had to push that to the back of our minds and treat it as a one-off.
“The win against Ulster at Ravenhill followed and that was the key. It was a must win game in a difficult place, but we did it and I think we can look back now and say that could be the defining moment of our season.
“Now we’ve won four on the bounce, I’ve been around the Dragons for a few years and it’s been a while since we did that, so we’re confident but realistic, too.
“We’ve never lost faith with the quality of players we’ve had coming in, so it was always going to take a couple of games to gel. Now we’re confident and believe we can go out there and win.”
Bath were so late leaving Toulouse on Monday that they scrapped Tuesday’s training session. Coach Steve Meehan explained, “We had a late departure on top of a disappointing result so I made the decision to cancel the session.
“Instead they had a weights session, some cardio work and their relevant medical assessments. I just felt they needed to be given another 24 hours to absorb it and move on.
“We out-Touloused Toulouse and outscored them by two tries to nil. It’s important now we capitalise on the performance, get back on playing that way and go out and beat the Dragons.”
