JOE CALZAGHE has several different strategies in place to beat Roy Jones Jr and is ‘100 times’ more prepared for tomorrow’s fight than he was in April against Bernard Hopkins, father and trainer Enzo Calzaghe has revealed, writes Michael Pearlman.

Calzaghe Sr took over media duties from Joe yesterday and was in a typically bullish mood.

“We have prepared for this contest as we have for the last 22 fights as a champion, though maybe we have a different mentality, there is greater excitement and intensity, I can see it in Joe’s eyes,” he said.

“You can spend too much time thinking. Joe is an instinctive fighter, he is 100% fit and is totally ready to beat Roy Jones.

“I see it, he is 100 times more motivated and prepared than for the Hopkins fight.

“As long as Joe turns up on the top of his game and I know he will, we have no problems at all.”

Enzo insists that he and Joe won’t go over strategies until just before the fight and that even then, Joe will be prepared to drop his best laid plans if need be, anything to get the job done.

“The dream Joe’s always had is to be undefeated, he has unrivalled heart, desire and ability,” Enzo said.

“I respect Roy Jones, I’ve respected him for ten years, but against Joe Calzaghe he will come up short, he can’t match Joe’s heart, no-one can.

“Roy doesn’t have the same chin as Joe or resistance, he’ll be taken further than he’s ever been before, Joe can punish fighters with his intensity.

“Roy has to look for surprise shots, sneaky shots, it might happen, it might not, but even if he does land a few, so what?

“You can make no plans for Joe. I don’t know what Joe Calzaghe will come to fight, maybe Joe doesn’t even know.

“Joe can be a dirty fighter, for definite, he can revert to whatever style he needs to win a fight. Remember, Sakio Bika said Joe was the dirtiest fighter he’d ever faced, imagine that!

“What Joe will turn up? Will it be the brawler, like we saw in certain fights, the master craftsman that we saw against Jeff Lacy or the fast and charismatic fighter? I honestly don’t know, but Joe has that ability to judge it on the night, it is what makes him great.”

Enzo refused to be drawn on plans for after the fight, but said he’d like to see Joe retire.

“I would like him to retire, but who knows, as long as the motivation and commitment is there he can fight on. But he’ll stay in boxing, whether it’s as a promoter or a trainer.”
