TONIGHT Joe Calzaghe, the greatest pound for pound fighter on the planet, walks into Madison Square Garden for one of the biggest battles of his career.
The 36-year-old, who has won 45 times in his career and has never been defeated, will fight Roy Jones Jr, an iconic four-weight world champion and guaranteed future Hall of Fame fighter. Roy Jones v Joe Calzaghe. Live from the Mecca of boxing.
The only two current boxers in the world who can and will forever be referred to as legends meeting for the first time in a fight ten years in the making.
This is not a fight that can or will secure Calzaghe's legacy, because that is already set in stone. But it is an intriguing and potentially explosive fight in which he must perform at his very best to protect that undefeated record.
In 1990 a bruised and battered Calzaghe cried in his father’s arms after being defeated in the European Junior Championships in Prague.
He vowed never to lose again. To this day he hasn't.
The stakes couldn't be higher as Calzaghe finally meets the man he was desperate to fight for so long, in a venue he's dreamed of fighting in since he was 11.
This could also be the clash that brings the curtain down on his career, Calzaghe repeating on more than one occasion that retirement is his next appointment.
The stage is set. Calzaghe's dream fight is upon him.
