FORMER Glamorgan cricketer Geoff Holmes has died suddenly aged 50.
Allrounder Holmes was a middle-order batsman and medium-pace seamer who made 8092 runs at 28.49 and took 88 wickets at 45.03 in 209 first class matches.
He was an integral part of the Glamorgan team in the 1980s and early 1990s.
He was named the club player of the year in 1988 when he hit four of his 11 career hundreds, including two in the same match against Somerset.
A statement on the club’s website reads: “Glamorgan Cricket is deeply saddened to hear that Geoff Holmes, Director of the Cricket Board of Wales, sadly passed away suddenly yesterday.
“Geoff was a dedicated servant of cricket in Wales, a tremendous asset to both the Club and those that worked alongside him at the Cricket Board of Wales, and he will be greatly missed.
‘He was not only a talented player but an extremely committed team member, a great example to his colleagues.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Geoff’s wife Christine, his children, family and friends at this sad time.”
