We have entered September and it feels like the summer has passed us by.
League cricket has come to an end in many parts and the nights are drawing in fast.
It’s my least favourite time of the year as the winter is just round the corner, although we are entering the most exciting part of the season which many call the business end.
This is when titles are won and lost, relegation or promotion gained.
For Glamorgan it’s a chance to finish in the top two and gain promotion to Division One in the championship.
With a draw achieved in Northampton it was time to face Leicestershire last week after beating them convincingly earlier in the season.
Being an important part of the season the management have decided to take big squads to games so that all bases are covered depending on the wicket.
Unfortunately it was the turn of Dean Cosker and I to travel down to Essex to play in the second team when we were left out at Leicester.
It’s a common theme for cricketers to be travelling day to day to various grounds.
We jumped in the car, prepared the sat nav and after three hours we arrived in Cambridge nowhere near where we should have been!
After a reasonably controlled argument we re-arranged the satellite system to our supposed destination via the services.
I think I’ve sampled every service station in the UK and probably every flavour of pastie this year!
It was a worthwhile trip with good practice had by both of us and stood us in good stead for the one day game on the Sunday.
The first team lads however were having a tricky time up in Leicester with a lot of time spent in the field.
The boys having been bowled out cheaply first innings spent everyday in the field.
Although there was a chance of a game when Leicester offered a run chase to our captain but it was declined as the pitch wasn’t conducive to chasing a target.
Time is running out for us to gain promotion, but I think the lads fancy sneaking a couple of wins towards the end when our spinners can come into the game.
They have won us our previous two games and are probably our best chance in the next few weeks.
l The one day game again was disappointing for us as we played well again for big parts of the match.
It was a good bowling display from the boys but we probably gave a few too many runs away in the field.
This was no surprise after having spent the previous four days fielding.
Again we put ourselves in a good position to win the game with Tom Maynard and William Bragg playing like two experienced old men at the crease.
Unfortunately we come up short again which was frustrating but our young lads are gaining some great experience in these games and in the future, I’m sure will finish games for us.
l It’s back to home this week for me as Glamorgan second X1 are playing Surrey at Panteg Cricket Club and I know I’m in for some stick.
In the pavilion there are many pictures of me from my very younger days.
And I’m sure the lads will make the most of the opportunity!
With pictures of me with my trousers worn very high or ones with me with a full head of hair!
l I’m sure some of you were watching the shambles at Old Trafford last week during the Twenty/20 international between England and Australia.
Lancashire have moaned about not getting a Test match and Glamorgan receiving one all year.
I must admit I was laughing that they hadn’t covered the run-ups properly last week.
Can you imagine if that was in Cardiff!?
This year the Oval, Edgbaston, Headingly and now Old Trafford have all had poor press in one way or another.
Lords and Cardiff especially should hold their heads high after their performances this year.
