THREE games were played in the first round of the A Jones & Co (Usk) Ltd Benevo-lent Cup.

Blaenavon Blues beat visitors Govilon 4-1 thanks to goals from Ryan Hewish, who scored two from the penalty spot, Brad Jones and Leigh Carrick. The Govilon goal was scored by Bev Bergoyne.

Last season’s Benevolent Cup winners, Clydach Wasps had a narrow 2-1 home win over Goytre.

Scott Ambler put the Wasps 1-0 up in the 15th minute. Five minutes later Phillip Sorrell put Goytre level before theh Wasps winner in the 40th minute from James Powell.

Panteg beat neighbours Sebastopol 3-1 with all three goals scored in the second half through Jon Butcher, Luke Whittam and Chris Mee.

Match of the day in the Premier Division was top spot club Gilwern & District at home to second-placed Panteg, who took all the points with a 3-1 away win.

Andrew McCarthy put Gilwern 1-0 in the 30th minute but five minutes later Panteg equalised through Gareth Staphnill.

And second half strikes from Kirk Morgan and Mike Smith sealed the win.

Panteg lead the Premier Division by one point with a game in hand while Gilwern & District drop to third.

Pontypool Town beat Trevethin 3-1 with goals from Dwain Hunt, Jason Stoker and Gavin Rogers.

Pontypool move up to second while Trevethin are in fifth.

Llanfoist are the latest side to visit The Island to take on Usk Town and come away with a hiding, losing 7-2.

Usk goals came from a Will Barton hat-trick, Jeremy Barton (2), Lewis Thomas and Daniel Jones (1).

Usk moves up to fourth while Llanfoist stay in sixth.

Llanarth had no game on rota.

In Division One Mardy had a 6-4 home win over visitors Tranch.

Goal scorers for Mardy were Tom Copeland (2), James Copeland (1), Lewis Edwards (1), Owen Edwards (1) and Joseph Hooton (1).

The goal scorers for Tranch were Mark Walker (2), Sam Davies (1) and Rhys Jones (1).

Fairfield United collected their third victory of the season with a massive 8-0 home win over Abergavenny Thursdays.

Russell Williams got a hat-trick, Ryan Bennett (2), and Jordan Merryfield, Glenn Rees and Alan Russell grabbed one apiece.

Prescoed remain at the top of Division Two following their 5-2 home win over Pontypool Town B.

The Prescoed goalscorers were Ohren Stewart (2), Patrick Mbefano (2) and Andrew Buller.

Gary Bond and Karl Crook scored for Pontypool Town B who were level at 2-2 with just 10 minutes remaining.

Usk Town B collected maximum points from their trip to Trevethin B with a 3-2 win thanks to goals from Peter Maddocks, Joe Henry and Adam Glen.

Michael Clark and Matthew Harris replied for the home side.

Clydach B won a seven goal thriller 4-3 at Llanarth B with goals from Nathan Hall (2), Andrew Bufton and Neil Evans.

Gavin Phillips (2) and midfielder Ali Maidment notched for Llanarth.

There will be no fixtures played on Saturday, November 14, due to the Wales v Scotland international friendly at the new Cardiff City Stadium.

The league was saddened to hear of the recent sudden death of Graham Jones of Abergavenny – the father of Llanfoist’s Nicky and Paul, as well as Kenny, David and the late Colin.

Jones snr was a former secretary of the Abergavenny & District Junior and Youth Leagues and a referee in the local leagues.

Along with his late wife Dot, he was a regular spectator around the Abergavenny area, especially watching his beloved Abergavenny Thursdays’ at her Pen-y-Pound Stadium.

A minute of silence was observed at all games last Saturday as a mark of respect to Jones and sympathy towards his family.
