THE cup competitions in the District league this week came up with a few surprises.

In the Greyhound Senior Bowl competition K-2 went two down against Shaftesbury Youth before going on to win 4-3 in a first round tie. Goals from David Jones (2), Keiron Merrett (2), Paul White, Matthew Hoskins and Nigel Thompson gave Lliswerry a 7-0 win over Villa Dino Christchurch. St Julians AFC made it into the next round with a 4-2 win against Rogerstone.

Luke Morrish, Mike Harrison, Carl Bale and Nathan Lewis scored.

Two teams fighting at the top of the Premier X clashed at Ponrhydyrun. Pontnewydd United sealed a 2-0 win over rivals Malpas FC with goals from Matthew Ceretti and Mike Manley. AC Pontymister had to go to extra time to record a 2-0 win against Graig-Y-Rhacca, the goals coming from Steven Wood and Dominic Waters. Cup holders Coed Eva Athletic eased their way into round three with a 5-1 win against Trethomas Bluebirds. Newport Corinthians gained a surprise 2-1 win over Pill AFC. Pill Hibernians and Machen FC were level at 1-1 after extra time before Machen won 4-2 on penalties.

K-2 play Tredegar Arms this Saturday to complete the second round.

In the Fire & Ice Junior Cup, the holders K-2 crashed out, losing 10-2 to St Julians AFC seconds.

Callum Jones (4), Ryan Parry (2), Mark Francis, Craig Hutchinson, Jack Perret and Geli Papantoniou got the Saints goals. Pill Hibernians won 5-2 away to Cwmbran Celtic with goals from Russell Edwards (4) and Derri Tolley. Two goals from Rhys Pring and Matthew Phillips (2), gave Graig-Y-Rhacca a 3-2 win against Marshfield. Ponthir ended Marshfield’s involvement in the cup, beating their thirds 3-1 with goals from Adam Jones (2) and David Wilson.

Goals from Scott Hastings (2), Jason Carter and Andrew Sillett gave Ty-Sign AFC a 4-2 win over Lliswerry.

Gaer Park Rangers were on cloud nine after giving Sporting Baneswell a 9-3 hammering.

Michael Kembrey (4), Luke Broom (2), Kieron Donovan (2) and David Robertson scored for Rangers.

Racing Club Newport beat Rogerstone 8-1 with goals from Chris Desmond (4) Kevin James (2) and two Rogerstone own goals. Waterfront United gained a surprise 2-1 win against CCYP after extra time. Oakfield Inn enjoyed the two Stuart Jones goals which gave them a 2-0 win over Bettws Social Club. Newport Eagles were crushed 11-2 by AC Pontymister . Greg Taylor (3), Terry Whatley (3), Rhys Taylor (2), Greg Tasker and Shaun Gittings scored for Ponty. Undefeated Pontnewydd United took their league form into the cup with a 6-0 win over Pill AFC, the goals coming from Dean Thompson (2), Nathan Cerreti, David James, Kieran Masterson and David Standing. Lliswerry were pushed all the way before gaining a 4-3 win over Newport Corinthians, their goals coming from Richard Dent (2), John Jones and Sean Clarke. Albion Rovers thirds kept their clubs cup dreams alive with a 4-3 win against Racing Club Newport. Robert Bowe (2), Jason Lalies and James Lee Brittan scored.

Bettws Social Club won 4-3 at home to Cwmcarn Athletic.

Two goals from Brett Jones gave the Six in Hand a 2-1 win against the Ferns AFC. Caerleon Town continue to disappoint their supporters after going down 8-0 at home to Malpas. Two games in the Premier X saw Marshfield win 4-0 at Cwmcarn Athletic, with goals from Gareth Georgeadis (2), Jason Kelly and Kyle Smith, and Tredegar Arms give Caerleon Town an 8-0 hiding.

There were also three games in the Premier Y.

Leaders Albion Rovers beat Cromwell Youth 4-2 with goals from Mark Stoneman (pen), Jon Titley, Marcus Corner and Wayne Williams.

Lucas Cwmbran continued their move up the table with a 4-1 win over Spencer Boys Club, with Steve Rogers (3) and Alan Seddon scoring. Second-placed Cwmbran Celtic won 4-1 at Malpas Gladiator.

In Division Three Lucas Cwmbran seconds beat Newport Eagles 4-1.

Damon Gates (2), Adam Hyde and Steve Parsons scored. Goals from Neil Swift (2), Corey Jones and Zack Cluer helped Albion Rovers to a 4-4 draw with Coed Eva Athletic. Ty-Sign AFC and FC Llanyrafon shared the points in a 1-1 draw.

In the Sunday League T.R.W remain undefeated after a 4-1 win against Kwik-Kleen AFC. Goals from Ian Vaughan (3), Craig Thomas and David Evans gave Pavillions a 5-4 win over Glan-Yr-Afon.

Real Bettws went down 2-1 at home to Whitehead Haymakers. Rogerstone and St Julians Old Boys shared the points in an hard fought 3-3 draw. The Docks Cons hit six to move into second after beating AFC Bettws Social 6-2. Athletico Allsorts gained a 5-0 win because the Church House failed to forfill their fixture due to suspension.
