CALZAGHE Promotions will stage it’s next show on November 20 at the Newport Centre and for one young boxer it will definitely be a night to remember.

Maindee-based cruiserweight Lee Lewis is set to have his first pro fight against Nottingham’s Mark Lewis.

The 20-year-old trains at Alway Gym with a six-strong team comprising of former British champions Eddie Avoth and Steve Sims as well as Vaughan Carnegie, Walter Pearce, Wayne Edwards and Noel Trigg.

And, as well as undefeated world champion Joe Calzaghe, the former St Julians and Hartridge school pupil has also caught the eye of fellow promoters Frank Maloney and former women’s champ Jane Couch.

Having won five Welsh titles and one British crown as an amateur, Lewis is rated as a hot prospect and he’s happy to be in such demand.

“It’s great that boxing legends like Joe, Frank and Jane are interested in me but I’m happy just to sit tight and see how things develop before I commit to anyone,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to my first fight and I’m confident of success against Mark Lewis who has lost all five of his pro fights.

“I’m in great shape,” he added. “I’ve lost five stone since June and I feel fantastic thanks to the work I’m doing with Steve and Vaughan and everyone at the gym.

“To fight with Joe at ringside will be an honour because he is an all-time great.”

Sims, British featherweight champion in the 1980s, is full of praise for his latest prospect. “Lee is looking fantastic in the gym,” he said. “He’s been sparring with Tony Borg’s fighters at St Josephs and everything is looking good for November 20.”

* Sims is also organising another show at the Ringland Community Centre on November 21. For tickets to the Calzaghe Promotions show call Lewis on 07891 996535 or Steve Sims on 07887 918823.
