LAST week, fans looked to in-form Caldicot Town’s home Division One game with Garden Village to produce a glut of goals – although the visitors only had to rely on a solitary penalty to earn success, writes Terry Daley.
However statistics once again point to Saturday’s Plough Road clash between Division Three rivals Goytre and Briton Ferry Llansawel being a goal-laden affair.
Second-placed Goytre have blazed a trail through most defences this season in rattling in 22 goals in nine MacWhirter Welsh League matches – the third-highest total in the entire 54-strong league.
However on the other hand, Goytre have conceded 16 times and only one team has let in more in the division – Briton Ferry Llansawel with 17!
Leading the way in the league and cup goal stakes with eight for Goytre is former Cwmbran Town and Croesyceiliog ace Chris Watkins and he’s backed up by Graham Mason (6) and Craig Jolliffe (4) while The form has swept Goytre up to second position, although all their rivals have played at least one matches less, while Briton Ferry Llansawel are a further two points and five places below.
A victory for Goytre will send them to the top of the table providing current Port Talbot-based leaders Corus Steel lose at Aberbargoed Buds, who are fourth.
Sandwiched in between Goytre and the Buds are Newport Civil Service, who entertain struggling Troedyrhiw at their Shannon Close home in Bettws.
Elsewhere in the division, seventh-placed Monmouth Town host Cwmamman United, fifth, while Risca United could move up two places from 13th if they become the eighth successive side to defeat visiting Garw since the start of the season.
In Division Two, Llanwern will seek to consolidate second spot with victory over the students of UWIC at Newport Stadium while a quartet of local clubs are all currently in the top 10.
Cwmbran Celtic (4th), Cwmbran Town (6th), Newport MYCA (7th) and Tredegar Town (9th) are all in home action, as are 11th-placed Croesyceiliog Sixth-placed Caldicot will travel to aTffs Well looking to recover from the disappointment of that shock home, Division One defeat at the hands of Garden Village while Caerleon will seek to build on last Saturday’s 3-0 success over visiting Afan Lido.
Taffs Well are two places below Caerleon in 16th position while Bryntirion, managed by former Cwmbran Town striker Francis Ford, are eighth.
