DARREN Morgan rolled back the years to produce a top-class display and claim his second TCC Pro Am snooker title by defeating double world champion Mark Williams in the Newport final.
It was also the perfect preparation for 43-year-old Morgan before he flies out to India next month and aims for the World Amateur Masters title again.
His victory was even more impressive as the left-hander, who rose to number eight on the Main Tour ranking list during his heyday as a professional, has had little practice in recent weeks, mainly due to renovations of his Red Triangle Club in Cross Keys.
Meanwhile, Williams, 34, has regained his place in the Main Tour Top 16 elite and has just reached the Grand Prix semi-finals, beating seven-times world champion Stephen Hendry, along the way.
The TCC final was delayed from August because Williams broke his wrist in an accident at home but it certainly was worth the wait as the two players compiled big breaks as they reached the mid-session interval level at 2-2.
Morgan took the first frame with an 81 break, Williams hit back with 71 and 79 before the veteran leveled the match with an 86.
Morgan then went two frames ahead, including a 121 where he missed a tough final black for a tournament best break, but Williams showed his class, potting six reds and six blacks for a 64 and then coming from 61-1 behind to level again with a 69.
But breaks of 54 and 64 took Morgan away again and he finally clinched the title in the 11th frame.
He said: “It is good to win considering that I have played so little over the past couple of months.
“I was relaxed from the start and I knew that, if I played well, I would have a chance.”
