LAST weekend saw the first round of the Tom Perkins Cup being played, the first cup competition of the season.
Three all Premier Division clashes saw Castle Inn play host to league leaders and neighbours Garnlydan and the visitors progressed to the next round with a 4–1 victory.
Rhymney A travelled to Cwm FC and after a close match finally won 2–1.
The other match saw Tredegar Athletic convincingly defeat basement Club Dug Out FC 8–1.
Several Premier v First Division matches saw no major surprises though Tredegar Arms were made to sweat against The Oak, when the high scoring match 6–6 went to dreaded penalties after extra time. Tredegar Arms scraped through this tough encounter and all credit must go to The Oak for putting up such a battle.
Nantyglo proved just too powerful in a 2–1 home victory over Pontllanfraith and Pantside defeated Coed Duon 5–0 .
First v Reserve Division clashes had a mixed set of results with two First Division teams progressing to the next round.
The best result was Brynmawr’s 7–3 demolition of high flying Treowen away from home. Neuadd Wen played host to Rhymney B and convincingly won 5–1.
Results going the way of the Reserve Division teams were Crusaders A & B defeat PFS Athletic and Fleur De Lys 6–1 and 4–1 respectively and Excelsior A defeated King David 5–2 away from home.
The only Premier v Reserve Division clash saw Rassau Rangers lose to RTB Ebbw Vale 5–3 after extra time.
Four all Reserve division clashes saw Abercarn defeat Bluebirds 7–1, Excelsior B and C both defeated at home by Trinant 4–0 and Pentwynmawr 4–2 respectively.
The highest score of the day was at Llanhilleth where the hosts were heavily defeated by Cefn Fforest 9–1, a win which belied their poor start to the season.
The draw for the next round of this Cup will be made on Monday, November 16 and will be seen on the League’s new website.
This weekend sees a return to League action with a reduced fixture list because of some clubs’ involvement in the Amateur Cup.
