EBBW Vale are only a point better off than this time last week but spirits are much higher in the camp ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Carmarthen Quins (kick-off 1pm).
The Steelmen went down to their ninth defeat from ten games when in-form Llandovery triumphed 24-22 at Eugene Cross Park last weekend.
However, Ebbw’s performance as well as the losing bonus point have given reason for optimism, particularly the display of the front eight who put their opponents on the back foot.
“It was pleasing to see how bitterly disappointed the boys were after the game,” said forwards coach Christian Loader.
“The attitude was terrific and it was definitely a step in the right direction. Of course we are not pleased with another defeat but we did well and played much better with a good style of rugby.
“The pack went well and we created chances out wide so we are getting there slowly but surely.
“The attitude was fantastic – the boys kept on going until the end and that mental strength cannot be coached.
“We have taken a great deal of confidence from the performance but we now need to go up another level at Carmarthen.”
At the moment the battle to avoid the drop appears to be between Ebbw and bottom club Pontypool, who trail their Gwent rivals by three points.
However, the Quins are not totally clear despite a thumping 40-10 win away to Pooler last weekend.
Last season’s Division One West champions, who are 10 points ahead of Ebbw, have won three games but have struggled on their own patch.
Impressive victories over Pontypridd and Aberavon have been balanced out by losses to Llanelli, Neath, Swansea and Glamorgan Wanderers.
“Carmarthen Quins will be abrasive, they will fight for everything and will be really determined to get the win on their own ground,” said Loader.
“We have got to be patient and if everyone concentrates on doing their own job then there is every chance of getting the points ourselves.
“For all the talk of terrific commitment and improvements being made, we are all aware that it is all about wins now and we would take a scrappy 3-0.”
