DAN Carter has said Wales boss Warren Gatland is in for a “big shock” if he expects someone else to be wearing the All Blacks’ number 10 jersey tomorrow evening.

Gatland seems to be intent in trying to ruffle his countrymen – unsuccessfully it has to be said – and his latest verbal grenade was suggesting that Carter would have to sit out the Millennium Stadium showdown.

The fly-half has admitted that today is judgement day and that he will make his call on whether his right calf is good to go.

The 27-year-old will take part in the captain’s run at the Millennium Stadium this evening and believes he will be able to give the all clear, keeping Stephen Donald on the bench.

“Maybe it’s one of Gatland’s mind games,” said Carter. “I am confident I will be fine and that he will be in for a big shock!

“The calf is not too bad and has improved every day. It has been encouraging and the fact that it was just a whack and not a strain or tear is a good thing.

“I had a bit of a run out with the team yesterday and will assess again today but I am pretty confident.

“Going into a game without really training is something I have done before and I have been with these players enough to know that I can slot back in.

“I have been learning about the subtle changes we have made from the sidelines so I am confident I will be fine.

“It has been more of a mental thing and I don’t think it will impact on my game. You just have to have the belief that you can do everything on the field.”

If he does trot out at 5.15pm tomorrow then he will once again be going up against Stephen Jones.

And the Crusaders man, who like Jones had a spell in French rugby, the Kiwi with Perpignan and the Welshman with Clermont, is a huge admirer of his Scarlets counterpart.

“I have huge respect for him and his game has come on leaps and bounds in the last couple of years,” he said.

“He is very experienced and played in a lot of Test matches. He directs the Welsh team extremely well and has developed a strong running game himself.

“Anybody that has the skills and strengths he has is a real threat.

“Wales are an extremely skillful side with some exciting backs - the back three are all dangerous while their midfield runners are very strong.

“We are expecting it to be similar to last year when they came out very fired up and were very physical. We have to match them.”
