NEW Wales coach Gareth Jenkins is wasting no time getting to grips with his job and plans to name the squad for next month's two-Test visit to Argentina a week today.

He will watch regional games this weekend, though Newport Gwent Dragons aren't playing, and will also receive a medical update on a number of players before announcing his squad.

A number of key players are also expected to be given a rest after touring New Zealand with the British Lions last summer and being involved in a full season - Michael Owen, Martyn Williams, Gareth Thomas, who is a major fitness doubt anyway, and Gethin Jenkins among them, possibly Stephen Jones as well.

Jenkins met with the existing management team and WRU chief executive Steve Lewis yesterday.

"After briefly discussing the framework and structure I will be working to as national coach with Steve Lewis and meeting with the rest of the full-time staff at the team's Vale of Glamorgan base, Alan Phillips presented his plan for the forthcoming tour of Argentina and we got straight on with the job in hand which is to select a squad of players for our two-Test tour of Argentina," said Jenkins.

"The process will be on-going over the coming week and we should be in a position to announce the squad by next Wednesday.

"There are a number of important regional games to watch in that short space of time with selection in mind, and it is also important to get a comprehensive report on players who may be carrying injuries or who need extra time in June for a full pre-season conditioning programme."

Jenkins says it will be much more difficult to sort out his full coaching staff and management team.

"Regarding any potential additions to the current Wales team management, the appointment of coaches is not an easy matter," he said.

"It is vital to get the right group of people on board in order to take Wales forward and that process may take time. Further announcements will be made when appropriate.

"In the meantime we are cracking on with tour selection which I am looking forward to with huge anticipation as I'm sure the players and the rest of the team management are."
