THE new-look Wessex Bus Hornets completed a quick-fire Easter Bank Holiday double for Newport Speedway following on from the Wasps’ home victory on Sunday.

And just like their senior counterparts had shown 24 hours previously, the Hornets appear to posses a team full of potential – with locally-born Tom Young and James White-Williams both showing up well from reserve.

Skipper Tony Atkin started off with a couple of good wins, Australian newcomer Mark Jones had the bit between his teeth in scoring paid 11 from a second-string berth while Tim Webster eclipsed them all thanks to four heat wins from five outings.

Webster made a couple of appearances for the Hornets towards the end of the 2009 campaign before making his move from Weymouth Wildcats permanent in the close season.

It might not have been as strong a Team Viking side as last season’s outfit which won this challenge match 60-32, but Webster displayed the sort of form which augers well for the Hornets’ forthcoming National League campaign.

Another Aussie, Todd Kurtz, who rode for the Wasps in Sunday’s 51-41 Premier Trophy qualifying win over King’s Lynn Stars, also looked good in taking a couple of chequered flags with Kyle Newman, a 2009 Wasp, winning heat 14 in fine style.

The Scandinavian-based visitors failed to muster too many extra points when tracking Dane Peter Juul Larsen in heat seven and his countryman Jesper Soegaard three races later.

Both could only finish second to register four points each with Webster and Jones winning the respective races. In total, the Hornets posted a quartet of 5-1 maximums as they roared to a highly-convincing success.

This meeting is the Hornets’ only scheduled outing ahead of the start of their 2010 National League campaign.

That starts with a home meeting with Isle of Wight Islanders on Saturday, April 24 with the Hornets scheduled to visit Buxton Hitmen the following day.
