ON-loan defender Chris Todd is so happy back in the Principality and with his new football club that he admits he’s very keen to extend his stay with the Exiles.
Todd is edging higher up the Spytty Park pecking order and is hopeful that he’ll be included in the side tonight at Weston-super-Mare (kick-off 7.45pm) as County chase a record breaking season in the Blue Square South.
County need two wins from their final four games to break 100 points and having already been crowned champions, Torquay defender Todd admits he’s having the time of his life at Spytty Park.
The Exiles’ promotion caps a dream year for Todd who has dealt with far more important matters, beating the toughest opponent he’s ever faced in 2010, leukaemia.
“I am very happy with things at the moment, obviously getting the all-clear from the doc was my biggest highlight, but I have enjoyed my football too,” he said.
“I like it here a lot, there is a terrific spirit in the dressing room and I would hope we can sort something out for next season.
“I am not a Newport player yet, it’s only a loan deal, but I am happy here and hope I will still be here in a year’s time.
“The illness I have had makes you realise what is important in life and that is happiness and health. It is lovely being back in Wales (Todd is a Swansea native) great to be back with the family and we’re all very happy.”
Todd admits no one in the County dressing room is under any illusions as to what is expected between now and the end of the campaign.
“The gaffer is hammering it home, he wants the record and is desperate to get there,” he said.
“We’ve come so close now and it’d be a real shame not to get over the line.
“We want to break 100 points, we are confident we can do it.”
The Exiles are battered and bruised at this stage in the season and may start to rest certain players, skipper Gary Warren and Wayne Turk both set for surgery at the end of the campaign.
Members of the squad who have been more on the fringes like Nathan Davies, Takumi Ake and Martyn Giles, as well as on-loan striker Ben Hunt, could all feature this evening ahead of Saturday’s trip to Havant and Waterlooville.
