EBBW Vale still have hope of avoiding relegation from the Premiership after a tense 22-12 win over fellow basement dwellers Pontypool at Eugene Cross Park.
Hooker Mathew Williams and winger Andrew Bevan crossed for the Steelmen, who close the gap to Pooler to eight points.
Pontypool need two points from their last two games to secure their top flight status while Ebbw must beat Glamorgan Wanderers and Neath. They also need to record their first four-try bonus of the campaign in one of those wins.
Lewis Robling kicked a last-gasp penalty to seal a 27-24 win for Newport against Neath. Wing Mike Poole and flanker Richard Dale scored tries.
Cross Keys fell to a narrow 25-20 loss to Swansea at Pandy Park. Jevon Groves and Dai Langdon scored tries while the Whites climb above Neath to the top of the table.
