NEWPORT County manager Dean Holdsworth hailed his history makers after a perfect weekend for the club.
The Exiles boss saw his side reach 100 points with a thumping 3-0 win over promotion hopefuls Dover Athletic at Spytty Park on Saturday before collecting their medals and raising aloft the Blue Square South trophy.
And a sun-baked weekend of celebration throughout the city was capped off yesterday with an open-top bus parade and civic reception.
“The whole weekend has been breathtaking, amazing. If I was asked to write a script of the perfect season then this has finished off the story superbly,” said Holdsworth.
“This place has been a fortress all year and the scenes of jubilation at the end were amazing.
“The team spirit and camaraderie has been great and everyone of them should be proud to wear that medal,” he added.
“And to get 100 points is incredible. It just gets better and better. You keep looking at that league table and to see us with three figures is unbelievable.”
Goals from Kerry Morgan, Chris Todd and Danny Rose sealed the win but Holdsworth paid tribute to the whole squad as they near the end of a long campaign which must rank as one of the best in the club’s history.
“The players deserve it,” said Holdsworth. “They’ve achieved what we kept pushing them to do.
“At the start of the season I asked them to create history and they’ve done it. I couldn’t be happier for them and for the fans.
“I’ve had people coming up to me and saying ‘I’ve been waiting all my life for this’ and it makes me very proud of what we’ve done as a football club.”
