NATHAN Davies, the man known as Mr Newport County to all Exiles fans, has revealed he fears for his future at Spytty Park.
The midfielder has spent more than a decade at his hometown club, making nearly 400 appearances since coming through the youth system.
He collected his championship medal with his teammates on Saturday and joined them to parade the Blue Square South trophy around the city on Sunday but this has been a frustrating season for the 27-year-old.
As a lifelong fan, Davies is delighted that the club has finally secured promotion to the Conference but, having made just four appearances all season, admits he does not feel part of what the team has achieved.
And, while he hopes to get a chance to remind everyone what he can do in Saturday’s final match at Braintree, he says that he has had no reassurances from manager Dean Holds-worth about his long-term future.
“It’s been a very frustrating season for me,” said Davies.
“Obviously I’m very happy for everyone, especially the fans, that we’re going up but on a personal note I would have loved to have played more of a part in it all. “I’ve been here more than 10 years and we’ve had some tough times.
“The fans really deserve this success because they have been with us through thick and thin.”
Davies’ season has been hampered by a serious ankle injury, which sidelined him for several months, and a loan spell at relegated Weymouth was cut short because the south coast side couldn’t afford to pay him.
“It has been very disappointing for me. I’ve been quite down about it,” he admitted.
“I was just starting to get my match fitness back and then the loan was ended.
‘I’m just desperate to get out on the pitch. Hopefully I can get a game at Braintree. It should be a party atmosphere with a lot of our fans there and I want to be part of that.”
As for next season, Davies is desperate to stay and wipe out the memory of his nightmare year.
“I would love to stay at the club and have a crack at the Conference but it’s not my decision,” he said.
“I don’t know if I’ll be here. I’ve not spoken to the manager yet but I’m sure once the season is over he’ll sit down with all of us and let us know who he wants to keep.”
