SEAMER Huw Waters can’t wait for Glamorgan’s swift return to action after playing a crucial role in the superb win over Middlesex.
Glam head to Derbyshire in the County Championship tomorrow in high spirits after the 78-run victory at Lord’s.
It was their first at the home of cricket for 56 years, their first away win for two years and the perfect response to their humbling at the hands of Sussex in the season opener.
It was a real team effort with Gwent pace ace David Harrison taking a first-inning five-wicket haul, Mark Wallace scoring invaluable first inning runs, skipper Jamie Dalrymple grabbing key wickets and all-rounder Jim Allenby chipping in with both bat and ball.
But Usk bowler Waters grabbed his chance to impress by playing a key role on the final day, returning figures of four for 39 and earning the praise of Dalrymple for getting through his overs cheaply.
The 23-year-old was something of a peripheral figure in 2009 but is likely to be more involved this season given the smaller number of seam options at director of cricket Matthew Maynard’s disposal.
Waters said: “I always knew I was going to get a chance this year with (South African fast bowler) Garnett Kruger not being here, I just had to take it.
“I’m pretty pleased with the way it turned out at Lord’s, the thing was to get the win.
“It’s nice to get a few wickets in April, in other years wickets have been quite flat at the start of the season.
“We’ll take it game by game as a team and I hope I can continue with this form.
“I can’t wait for Derby, I’ve got overs under my belt and want to carry my rhythm into that game.”
Young pace bowler James Harris is rested for the trip to Derby with the rest of the party who were on duty at Lord’s being named in a 12-man squad.
Glamorgan squad: G Rees, M Cosgrove, M Powell, J Dalrymple (captain), B Wright, J Allenby, M Wallace (wicket-keeper), R Croft, D Harrison, D Cosker, C Ashling, H Waters.
