WALES' Ryan Day became the third seeded player to crash out in the first round at the Betfred.com World Championship as Mark Davis followed namesake Steve into the last 16.
Hastings cueman Davis - no relation to the six-times former champion with whom he shares a surname - had only reached the second round once previously, when he lost to Peter Ebdon in 1995.
He also qualified in 1997, 2001 and 2008, only to lose on each occasion in the first round.
But the 37-year-old is enjoying the best season of his career while world number six Day has struggled for form, and Davis was a worthy 10-8 winner.
Davis is already a world snooker champion - of sorts - having landed the six-reds title earlier this season in Killarney.
He will face Northern Ireland's Mark Allen in the second round in Sheffield.
Day followed fellow seeds Mark King and Marco Fu in making a first-round exit.
