AN EARLY goal set Premier Division high-flyers Trevethin on their way to a 4-1 midweek win over third-placed Pandy at The Ruffetts.
Man of the match Dean Lewis struck the first of his two goals after just 28 seconds with further strikes by Dwain Hunt and Shaun Williams securing the three points.
Pandy’s man of the match Jason Osbourne scored a consolation from the penalty spot.
Trevethin were due to play away to Blaenavon Blues in the quarter final of the P&P Pest Control Open Cup but the home side Blaenavon Blues could not raise a side.
This was because a large number of the Blues’ players decided to go to Swansea for the day to celebrate a 21st birthday. Another sign of the decline of grassroots football. But Pontypool have sneaked above Trevethin at the head of the table thanks to a pair of victories. They first played Pandy at Albion Road and recorded a 4-1 win. Richard Wakeling scored after 10 minutes and they struck their second on the half hour through Craig Long.
Robert Didcote pulled a goal back for Pandy in the 57th minute but five minutes later he scored an own goal and Gavin Rogers made the game and the points safe for Town with a goal in the 85th minute.
Pontypool Town also won 1-0 at Llanarth, who gave a very much improved performance. The all important goal was scored in the 25th minute by Craig Long.
The six points put Pontypool at the head of the Premier Division, one point above Trevethin, although the second-placed side have two games in hand.
Llanarth had a 5-1 midweek home win over Llanfoist. Tom Bowden (2), Colin Morgan, Michael Morgan and Steve Morgan got their goals while Daniel Richards replied for seventh-placed Llanfoist.
Usk Town recorded two wins this week and notched up a dozen goals in the process. Gilwern & District visited The Island on Thursday but Usk Town won the game 5-2.
Town held a 5-0 lead through goals by Lewis Thomas, George Ashworth, Jeremy Barton, David Glencross plus a penalty by substitute Will Barton. Adam Carrington pulled two goals back, one from the spot, before the final whistle.
On Saturday Usk Town won 7-5 at Llanfoist. Usk Town went 3-0 in front after just five minutes, but Llanfoist steadied the boat and got back to 3-2 at half time.
Scorers for Llanfoist were Andrew Ewers (2), Ben Marshall, Gareth Williams and Leighton Brown. Goal scorers for Usk Town were George Ashworth (2), Matthew Cartwright (2), Michael Dudson, Jeremy Barton plus a Ross Curzon penalty.
Leighton Brown was sixth-placed Llanfoist’s star man while George Ashworth was four-placed Usk’s.
On Saturday Pandy recorded a 6-1 home win over Gilwern & District. Gareth Staphnill (4) and top performer Robert Didcote (2) grabbed their goals while Matthew Williams scored the visitors’ goal and was their man of the match.
In a midweek P&P Open Cup quarter-final match, Clydach Wasps won 2-0 at Pontypool Town thanks to goals by Scott Ambler (39 minutes) and Tyrone Gravell (41 minutes).
Town’s Karl Hooper missed an 85th-minute penalty while the Wasps had Kristian Lewis sent off in the 56th minute for verbal abuse towards the referee.
In a rescheduled A Jones & Co (Usk) Ltd Benevolent Cup quarter-final, Fairfield United beat Blaenavon Blues 3-2. James Cox scored a brace for the Blues but United edged them out thanks to strikes by Anthony Stephens, Jake Thomas and Glenn Rees.
In the P&P Pest Control Open Cup Round 2, Race beat Pontypool Town B 2-1. Goal scorers for Race were Owain Williams and Shaun Weaving while David Collier struck for Pontypool Town B.
In the B&T Parrots Aquatic & Reptile Supplies Division Two Cup, Trevethin B won 4-3 against Usk Town B.
Goal scorers for Usk Town B were Adam Glencross (2) and David Glencross but braces from Nathan Williams and Michael Clark edged it for Trevethin B.
Clydach Wasps and Goytre are level on points at the top of Division One, though the former have a game in hand and better goal difference.
Goytre beat Govilon 6-1 on Monday evening thanks to goals from man of the match Dan Wharton (4), Scott Walters and Anthony Richards. Stuart Norman scored the Govilon goal while Simon Phillips was their star man.
Goytre won 5-0 away at Pen-y-Pound Stadium against Abergavenny Thursdays with Anthony Richards (2), Gareth Edmunds (who also missed a penalty), Matthew Perkins and Simon Ritter grabbing the goals. Thursdays had Chris Lambert sent off while Goytre had Paul Williams red-carded.
On Saturday Thursdays lost 10-0 at home to Pilcs. Goal scorers were Steve Rogers (4), Matthew Haynes (2), Mike Murton, Matthew James, Kelvin Anstice and Shane Harris.
On Thursday, PILCS had a 4-2 win at Cwmffrwdoer, whose goals were scored by Ben Walker and Shane Taylor.
Charlie Collins (2), Alex Bayliss and Daniel Holt were on the scoresheet for Pilcs.
On Saturday, Cwmffrwdoer won their local derby at Fairfield United 2-1 thanks to strikes by Scott Horseman and Jamie Hoskins. Aaron Black got United’s goal.
On Monday evening, Fairfield United had a 1-0 away win over Tranch.
Tranch lost 5-3 at home to Clydach Wasps on Thursday. Ricky Ball, Kevin Rogers and Andrew Hayes scored for Tranch, while Tom Morgan, Ryan Watkins, Tyrone Gravelle, Scott Ambler and Rob McKenzie struck for the Wasps.
On Saturday Tranch were on the winning end of a 5-3 scoreline against Govilon after goals from Andy Burchill, Ross Peake, Chris Bradbury, Paul Hayward and Andrew Hayes. Scorers for Govilon were Stuart Norman, Dwain Lewis and Craig Phillips.
On Monday evening Blaenavon Blues beat Cwmffrwdoer 7-2 with goals coming from John Bull (2), Grant Evans (2), Alex Bull, Ryan Huish and Craig Harris while Mike Passmore and Ben Walker netted for Cwmffrwdoer.
Blaenavon Blues beat Sebastopol 5-1 on Thursday. Goal scorers for the Blues were Michael Waite, Leigh Carrick, Leon Catley and Alex Bull. Nathan Priest, playing his first game back after 20 months following an injury to his knee, also got one. Terrance Hill struck for Sebastopol.
On Monday Sebastopol lost 4-1 at home to local rivals Pilcs.
On Saturday, New Inn forfeited home advantage and played at Mardy. They lost 3-1 despite Marc Coia’s strike. Lewis Welch, Matthew Lynch and Chris Davies ensured Mardy took the spoils.
On Monday evening, New Inn failed to raise a side to take to Abergavenny Thursdays. New Inn lose a game, three points and five goals as a result.
On Thursday, New Inn lost 4-0 at home to Govilon whose goal scorers were Lewis Meadows (2), Robbie Burns and Chris Seabourne.
There was disappointment for Clydach Wasps’ Gwent County side, who lost 5-1 in the final of the FAW Welsh Trophy to Glan Conway. The Wasps goal was scored by James Schofield.
