IT’S crunch time for three local clubs – Caldicot Town, Cwmbran Celtic and Aberbargoed Buds – who are all seeking championship trophies in across the three divisions.

Third-placed Caldicot have fallen away somewhat recently in only drawing their last four games, including the 1-1 home stalemate with Barry Town on Wednesday, when striker Gareth Cullimore grabbed his 26th league and cup goal of the season.

They travel to face second-placed Afan Lido tomorrow, while another Port Talbot-based side, Goytre United, head the table but are without a game.

Caldicot are four points adrift of Lido having played the same amount of games (27) and five behind United with a match in hand over the table-toppers.

In Division Two, an own goal from Tredegar Town defender Liam McCan gave Cwmbran Celtic a 1-0 home victory on Tuesday.

The result took Celtic back to the top of the league and while they can still be pipped for title, it would take something of a football miracle for them not to go up.

They are miles ahead of any club outside the top three and those who could overtake them would have to win six, seven and even eight successive games to prevent Celtic from reaching the top flight for the first time.

As far as the title is concerned, Celtic’s rivals are Penrhiwceiber Rangers and AFC Llwydcoed, who they lead by five and 13 points respectively – with each club having nine games remaining.

Rangers host third-from-the-bottom Llangeinor tomorrow while Celtic will look to town rivals Croesyceiliog to take points off visiting Llwydcoed at Woodland Road.

In Division Three, Buds striker Ross Fowler scored both goals in the 2-1 win at Newport Civil Service in Tuesday and his league and cup tally of 29, is the highest in Gwent senior football – domestic or otherwise.

The second-placed Buds are well on course for promotion and victory over the team immediately above them, visiting Pontypridd Town, will be a massive step forward for manager John Lewis’ side.

The Buds are six points behind leaders Briton Ferry Llansawel, but have no less than half a dozen matches in hand and are only a point adrift of Pontypridd having played three games less.

BFS are at Risca United, who are desperate for three points towards their battle against relegation.
