IT’S been a busy period for the Wasps with away trips to Rye House, Kings Lynn and Somerset as well as two home matches.
You couldn’t have two more challenging tracks for inexperienced riders in their first season in British speedway than the tight and slick home of the Rye House Rockets and the very grippy circuit at the Norfolk Arena where the Kings Lynn Stars ride.
So you would expect Kim Nilsson, Anders Mellgren and Todd Kurtz in particular to struggle and they did.
However, we will be returning in the Premier League later in the season and we should see the benefit of their learning curve.
The third leg of our week on the road proved a lot better as we ran the Somerset Rebels close at the Oak Tree Arena and then had a comprehensive victory over them back home at Queensway Meadows on Sunday.
That performance was what we had planned for when the team was put together in the close season. It takes time for the new boys to settle and both our young Swedes were on the pace with a string of heat victories.
That has given us a new level of confidence as we move from the regional Premier Trophy competition into our first Premier League fixture of the 2010 campaign this Sunday afternoon against the Redcar Bears.
The North East side struggled in their Premier Trophy group initially but have just completed a home and away double over Stoke so their tails will be up too.
Former World Champion Gary Havelock remains a force despite this being his 26th season and he has shown a real liking for our circuit on past visits. So a good match is in store for the fans.
I hope that my luck is a little better this week. An exclusion for a first bend fall in heat six was blended with a heat eight victory.
Many thought that I could have been re-instated as Chris Neath had been the previous week in similar circumstances but referees differ in their interpretation of first bend bunching.
Still, the rest of the boys went well as I said and it has been a more than reasonable start to this season. Let’s look forward to more wins!
