CWMCARN Paragon Cycling club: The hill-climb handicap, the first domestic championship race of the year, was won in fine attacking style by Ioan Williams.
The seven mile course up the beautiful and demanding scenic drive is a real test of stamina and speed, a terrain which the powerful all-rounder Williams excels on.
Williams recorded the third fastest time on his way to victory (22mins 30secs), ahead of Rob Mould (23mins 48secs) and Richard Harris in the fastest time of 21mins 24secs.
Williams joined a strong Cwmcarn team on Sunday to contest the fifth running of the Noel Jones Memorial Road Race, an event dedicated to the late Cwmcarn president and Welsh international rider.
The 105 km race covering seven laps of a 15km undulating course between Three Cocks/Llyswen and Boellys Castle is rated as one of the toughest one day races in Wales.
R.Raymond attacked from the start and with another rider led the field for three laps before a group of six, including R.Harris, pulled them back.
The six pushed on quickly opening a three minute gap and the race winning move was on.
Abergavenny R.C. had three riders in the break giving them the numerical advantage and when former Cwmcarn favourite George Rose attacked with less than a lap to go the remaining two Abergavenny riders blocked any attempts to chase him down, leaving Rose to ride to victory by more than a minute and give Abergavenny a 1-2-3 on the podium.
Harris, race winner in 2008, finished an excellent eighth overall with Sam Anstice the next best placed Cwmcarn rider in 13th position. Robbie Westwood was in superb form at the Newport Youth Omnium Event at the National Velodrome, recording a blistering 1.0929 min ride for the 1km.
He was second in the scratch and points races and third in the Devils Race combined to give him an excellent second place overall. Joe Anstice, rode to seventh overall.
NEWPORT Phoenix Cycling club: The fourth event in the time trial calendar took place on Tuesday over 10 miles on another fine sunny spring evening on the A48 course.
The 11-rider field, including seven Phoenix members, took advantage of the conditions and ensured another keenly fought contest.
The honours went to former Phoenix paceman Andy Butcher with an excellent time of 22.18 minutes, followed just 16 seconds later by Dave Harwood of the Ross on Wye club.
Richard Lawrence claimed third place in 23.15 minutes, with Gareth Rees of Phoenix, in superb form at this early stage turning in his second personal best of the season, finishing fourth in 23.31 minutes.
Fifth place went to Richard Lawton of Phoenix with 23.54 minutes.
Two personal bests in a row ensure that Rees continues to head the Phoenix points table with a perfect 40 points from four starts.
In second place is Allan Hodgson on 34 points, with Lawton lying third with 18 points from just two starts.
Susan Burnett is in fourth place with Alex Roberts fifth.
John O’Shea heads the Senior championship with a perfect 40 points, although challenger Rob Frampton is not far behind on 36.
At this early stage in the season there is clearly everything to race for in both competitions.

Cycling club Blaenau Gwent: Conditions looked good for the 65th running of the Brian Fry Memorial Open 25 mile time trial promoted by CC Blaenau Gwent.
The 112 riders benefited from a strong tail wind on the leg from Usk to Monmouth.
But the return leg was into a stiff crosswind that wiped out much of the early gains and resulted in most riders recording times well below their best.
Only the strongest riders would post good times and the overall win was taken by James Wall of Team Echelon-spiuk.
He prevailed against the wind to set a new course record of 50 minutes, an average speed of 30mph.
Drag2Zero.com rider Stu Dodd took second place, with the final step on the podium going to Jon Wynn riding for Northover Vets Rudy Project.
Results: 1st James Wall (Team Echelon-spiuk) 50-00, 2nd Stu Dodd (Drag2Zero.com) 50-58, 3rd Jon Wynn (Northover Vets Rudy Project) 52-47 CC Blaenau Gwent: 15th Clinton Evans 56-33, 41st Martin Latewood 1-0-40.
