NEWPORT Gwent Dragons head coach Paul Turner is in the market for a full back/wing as a result of the serious injury suffered by Martyn Thomas and the departure of Richard Fussell.

Martyn Thomas, the only specialist full back in the Dragons squad, is expected to miss at least the first month of next season after breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle in a horrific injury against Cardiff Blues ten days ago.

And Fussell decided a while ago to join the Ospreys, leaving Will Harries and Aled Brew as the only two senior specialist wings in the squad, though Jason Tovey can play at full back and players like Matthew Watkins can operate on the wing.

But Turner will be looking closely at the full back and wing positions, though he won’t rush into anything and neither will he be able to go over budget.

The Dragons had been looking at a prominent New Zealander playing in the Super 14 competition Down Under, but budget constraints look to have put paid to that.

Turner, however, believes that a number of players will come on to the market soon and is aware that French clubs Montauban and Bayonne have hit problems recently.

It has already been well documented that Worcester outside- half Matthew Jones intends to return to Wales to join the Dragons, where he will be involved in a healthy competition with Tovey.

And Cardiff Blues and Wales openside flanker Robin Sowden-Taylor is believed to be close to a move along the M4 to Rodney Parade as well.

Turner is also looking at recruiting a lock, with Hoani MacDonald released and believed to be joining the new side in Melbourne along with Gareth Delve and Danny Cipriani, among others, and Luke Charteris on Wales duty a great deal.

Blues lock/blindside Scott Morgan is a possibility, but Turner, in much the same way as he is doing at full back, is waiting to see who becomes available at the end of the season.

The Dragons have also signed a young Welsh-qualified player and are due to release details soon.
