EBBW Vale are hot favourites ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Bedlinog yet a bonus point is not at the forefront of their minds.

Victory remains the Steelmen’s prime concern rather than running in tries to turn four points into five.

The Steelmen’s tally of 10 wins is the same as table-topping Newbridge’s but they trail their Gwent rivals by six points, albeit with a game in hand.

That is down to their respective bonus points totals – the leaders having 11 next to their name and third-placed Ebbw just five.

However, Neil Edwards’ side found their try-scoring form when beating Rumney 43-6 in grim conditions at Eugene Cross Park last weekend.

They crossed the whitewash six times in a performance that delighted their head coach.

Yet he insists they won’t head to Bedlinog thinking tries will keep flowing.

“The boys are doing well and it was a great performance last week but we aren’t getting carried away,” said Edwards.

“We need to keep going and we are not taking things for granted at Bedlinog – how many times have you heard about a side near the bottom stunning a side near the top?

“If we keep working hard then we will come away with the spoils and perhaps a bonus point but if we don’t then we will come unstuck.

“We just have to keep playing sensible rugby and to match last week’s performance at the set piece, which was excellent against a tough pack.”

Ebbw continue to be bolstered by scrum-half Matthew Thomas and full-back Charlie Simpson, who are on loan from Pontypool and Newport, respectively.

Newbridge were happy with four points last week after overcoming both a rugged Beddau side and the conditions.

Three penalties by fly-half Richard Powell secured a 9-0 victory and they will be looking to keep winning when they head to Treorchy tomorrow afternoon.

The only other game to beat the weather last weekend was Merthyr’s impressive 24-7 win at Gilfach Goch, who dropped to third as a result of the loss.

Blackwood saw their game at Bedlinog postponed but will hope to take to the field when they host bottom club Ystrad Rhodda tomorrow.

The Glan-yr-Afon Park outfit are comfortable in mid-table and will be fancied to inflict an 11th loss in 12 games on their visitors.

Elsewhere Bargoed host Gilfach Goch, Rumney head to Beddau and Merthyr are at home to Llanharan.
