THERE’S no panic at the Parade, insists Newport Gwent Dragons coach Paul Turner after his team were beaten 23-16 by Glasgow, meaning they have lost all their six Heineken Cup pool matches for the first time.
“It was disappointing and it was a game we threw away, if we’re going to do that I suppose a dead rubber is the best place to do it,” said Turner.
“But it’s about how the season goes now in the Magners League. We’ve got to be more cohesive and more patient.
“It wasn’t clever today and it wasn’t good, though had we won we would have done better in the competition than last year.
“We usually beat Glasgow at home and we put in a good first-half performance against the wind when we did everything but score. They are a well-organised defensive unit, but we kept going into the heart of their defence.
“Jason (Tovey) is a quality player, but he had one of his ordinary games. At 16-16 we should have gone for the corner not at goal, then when they overthrew the line Gavin Thomas threw the ball over his head and the game went.
“That was disappointing after the rearguard action in Toulouse last week, we’ve got to be smarter, but if you don’t take your chances and if you don’t look after the ball then you get bitten.
“But we’ll always be competitive in Europe, as we showed last weekend, but now in the LV Cup it’s going to be a big week for our development players.
“Newport beat Cornish Pirates, who are flying high in the English Division One, and they go to Plymouth tomorrow.
“I thought Gavin Thomas was outstanding today and Toby Faletau showed his potential again. Luke Charteris, Ashley Smith and Aled Brew worked particularly hard and Wayne Evans had his moments as well.
“And Phil Price did another job on two quality tight heads, but our scrum has not had its just rewards.”
Glasgow coach Sean Lineen was not particularly jubilant, though his team had earned only their third away win in the Heineken Cup and it was their third victory in the competition this season.
“Any away win in Europe is big, but we were poor and we can’t get much lower than that,” he said.
