UNBEATEN Gwent star Nathan Cleverly has finally got his man.

The 23-year-old from Cefn Fforest will get a shot at German champion Juergen Braehmer for the WBO light-heavyweight title at Wembley Arena on Saturday, April 2.

The announcement comes after months of frustration for Clever-ly, with mystery surrounding Braehmer’s circumstances.

Cleverly won the interim WBO title in December with a unanimous points decision against tricky Frenchman Nadjib Mohammedi to put himself in pole position for a shot at the outright crown.

Braehmer, who still has a prison sentence for assault hanging over his head, was all set to take on WBA title-holder Beibut Shumenov in a unification bout last month. But the German pulled out because of illness and must now fight former Team Calzaghe man Cleverly or be stripped of his belt.

Mathematics graduate Cleverly told the Argus: “I always thought that I would get my shot at Braehmer.

“There was talk that he might be stripped or would vacate the title, but I never wanted that to happen. I never wanted to win it because of political issues.

“He’s the champion and the only way I would consider myself a true champion is if I took the belt from him, rather than picking up the vacant title.

“I’m delighted that it’s all signed and sealed now and it’s finally on after months of doubt.

“These are exciting times for me though, after all that’s gone on, I’ll only really believe it’s on when he’s walking to the ring.”

Cleverly would become the 11th Welsh world boxing champion if he lands the WBO belt.

And should he be crowned world champion, he would become only the second Welshman after lightweight legend Freddie Welsh to win British, Commonwealth, European and world belts.

“I’m looking forward to it and have got to be prepared both physically and mentally,” he said.

“I’ve won all my eliminator fights and become interim light-heavyweight champion.

“In doing that you kind of make yourself a mandatory challenger so they’ve got no option other than fight you.

“I’ve fought four of my last nine fights in London so I’m happy that it’s going to be there and my fans won’t have to travel to Germany.”

Promoter Frank Warren said: “I’m delighted that I’ve been able to secure home advantage for Nathan.

“He’s worked incredibly hard for this opportunity, and waited patiently to get his shot.

“He’s getting this fight at exactly the right time, and it could be a massive moment in his career. This is a huge fight.

“Braehmer is a proven champion and belongs at elite level, while Cleverly is young and hungry and could be the next big thing in the UK.”
