NATHAN Cleverly is looking for a little help from his friends as he prepares to take on Juergen Braehmer for the WBO light-heavyweight title.

And few are better qualified to lend the Cefn Fforest fighter a hand than Gwent’s finest Joe Calzaghe.

The pair were both trained by Enzo Calzaghe in Newbridge until Joe’s bitter split with promoter Frank Warren in 2008.

Cleverly opted to stick with Warren and train with his dad Vince at the Church Place gym in Bargoed, leading to a cooling in their relationship.

But they have long since patched up their differences and Calzaghe, the undisputed world light-heavyweight king before his retirement in 2009, is set to put his Hollywood ambitions to one side to train with Cleverly before the biggest fight of his life.

They have already been out running together and Cleverly revealed that they may get in the ring for some sparring sessions before the clash with Braehmer at Wembley Arena on April 2.

“It was good,” said the 23-year-old of the training run. “It’s a long time since we last done that. For Joe it brought memories back for him.

“I had to slow down the pace for him, he’s not kept it going like he used to! But he rolled back the years and he enjoyed it.

“He got the buzz back I suppose and it was good for me because when I used to train with Joe it’s what we used to do and it was good to recapture those times.

“Sparring is a possibility,” he added. “That would be nice, he has touched on it because he’s southpaw like Braehmer so hopefully he will get the training gear out. He has mentioned it.

“I think he would come down and help if I really wanted him to.”

* Cleverly will take time out from his training regime to attend a special charity event at the Dowlais Catholic Club in Merthyr Tydfil on Tuesday, February 22 at 6pm.

Cleverly and Cwmbran super-bantamweight Jamie Arthur will take on snooker star Jimmy White on the green baize to raise money for Help the Heroes and Merthyr Cancer Aid.

There are a limited number of tickets avaialble for £20 from 07791 751064 or from the club on 07535 686768.
