NEWPORT County caretaker boss Tim Harris didn't know whether to laugh or cry after an extraordinary Saturday night in Mansfield.
He saw his side go 2-0 up after two minutes and 3-0 up inside half an hour in front of the Premier Sport television cameras.
But they were then reduced to 10 men when Chris Todd was sent-off and shipped three goals – all before the half-time whistle.
“It was very entertaining for the fans and for the viewers on TV but I'm disappointed,” he said after a goalless second-half.
“I hadn't even made it to my seat before the first one went in and to be 2-0 up in two minutes was unbelievable.
“We got ourselves into a fantastic position and the events that unfolded in the first half were disappointing.”
Despite the result, which leaves his side in eighth position in the Blue Square Bet Premier League table, Harris wasn't too downbeat.
“We could have folded in the second half but we didn't,” he added.
“We reorganised and went out there with the belief that we'd get something.
“When Yemi Odubade went through at the end I was praying that it would hit the back of the net.
“It wasn't to be but the boys deserved something for their efforts. They showed real character and that is the positive to take from the game.”
Harris was full of praise for midfielder Danny Rose but the star of the show was Charlie Griffin, who capped his return to the club by scoring one goal and making the others for Robbie Matthews and Rose.
“Charlie and me go back a few years and the link-up play with Robbie was fantastic,” said Harris. “They've played together before and you could see that.
“Charlie scores goals and he's much more experienced than when he was last here.
“He works his socks off and he's going to be a huge asset from now until the end of the season.”
County now travel to face local rivals Merthyr in a friendly tomorrow night before Friday night's league showdown with Luton Town at Spytty Park.
Todd will miss that match through suspension but captain Gary Warren returns from his own four-match ban to face the Hatters.
