THE production line of talented boxers continues to run smoothly at St Josephs gym in Newport.
Trainer Tony Borg has nurtured the talents of Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sean McGoldrick, Prizefighter winner Gary Buckland and Welsh champions Rob Turley and Lee Selby amongst many others.
Latest prospect Lee Churcher faces his High Noon moment on Saturday when he takes on Bargoed’s Gary Cooper in front of his home crowd at the Newport Centre.
On the line is the vacant Welsh light-middleweight title as the 30-year-old tops the George and Dragon Promotions bill.
Churcher has already beaten Cooper once, at the same venue back in July 2009, and he’s confident he can join the St Joes roll of honour by bringing the Welsh belt back to the gym.
“Training has gone brilliantly,” he said. “I’ve done a lot of 10-rounders but I’ve paced myself well and I’m in great shape.
“Over four rounds it’s about going flat out but with 10 rounds you’ve got to be more patient and it gives me the chance to show my boxing skills.
“My nutrition is good and I’ll make the weight no problem. I just can’t wait to get in the ring and win my first title – all the hard work will be worth it then.
“Everything has gone to plan. They’re all looking good,” said Borg, who also has Turley and Frankie Borg in action on Saturday night.
“The gym is on a high because we’ve had a couple of wins on the bounce and the morale is good.
“It’s a good mix and the options for sparring have been great for everyone.
“We had Bradley Pryce win the Welsh title when he was with us, Lee Selby won it, Rob Turley won it in February and hopefully Lee will be next,” he added.
“Frankie Borg won’t be far behind and Selby or Gary Buckland could be going for British or European titles soon so things are looking good for us.”
Pontypool’s Jeff Evans is also in Welsh title action on Saturday as he challenges Llanelli’s Shon Davies for the light-heavyweight belt.
On the undercard Turley, who won the Welsh super-bantamweight title against Paul Economides last time out, takes on Crawley journeyman Robin Deakin in a four-rounder.
Frankie Borg faces Swansea’s Joe Jones, ex-Team Calzaghe man Kerry Hope goes up against Bobby Wood, Darren Pryce fights Lewis Browning and Dai Jones takes on Sean Gorman.
Doors open at 6.30pm with a VIP dinner to start at 7.15pm and the first fight scheduled to start at around 8.30pm.
