COMMONWEALTH Games gold medal hopeful Sean McGoldrick is facing a three-week countdown to find out his fate – and he’s set to wile away the time by facing the best in Europe, writes Michael Pearlman.
The 19-year-old from Newport lost the Commonwealth Games final on countback to Sri Lankan Manju Wanniarachchi in the 56kg category last October despite his corner believing him to be a clear winner.
However, the 31-year old Sri Lankan failed a doping test for a banned substance and the Commonwealth Gamers Federation have nullified the result, subject to a three-week appeal window.
But rather than fret on the result St Joseph’s fighter McGoldrick is heading to Germany with the Team GB boxing squad alongside stablemate and Welsh champion Fred Evans.
They will travel the country boxing in three different cities and trainer Tony Borg is delighted McGoldrick can have a break from thinking about his possible gold medal.
"It should be a great experience for them," he said.
"They flew out yesterday and Sean can enjoy his boxing and not worry about a situation he can’t control.
"If he’d have lost the fight and been well beaten we’d have come home and said ‘don’t worry about it, it’s not your medal and we move on’.
"But that wasn’t the case, Sean won that fight and should’ve been named the winner and if the Sri Lankan has cheated, he definitely deserves the gold medal."
