CEFN Fforest fighter Rob Turley is looking to take a page out of the box of his mate and neighbour Nathan Cleverly by becoming a regular fixture on television as he nears a British title fight, writes Michael Pearlman.

The super bantamweight got a taste of the big time by competing in Prizefighter but will now return to the ranks of big time boxing by providing the chief support for the June 4 bill at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena.

Big time boxing returns to Wales that night with Gavin Rees headlining against Andy Murray with the European lightweight title on the line.

However, the chief support fight will also be on the show broadcast by Sky Sports and that gives Turley the chance to impress in a Celtic title/British title eliminator clash with unbeaten puncher Carl Frampton.

At 24, Turley has time on his side and has won his last three fights as he targets a potential British title showdown with champion Jason Booth, whose defeat of Cwmbran’s Jamie Arthur prompted him to retire.

“We were trying to get Rob on the bill at all and now he’s the chief support and will get television exposure which is so important,” Rob’s father Chris Turley explained.

“His mate Nathan told him to take the fight and Rob is excited, it’s a great opportunity for him.”

Turley Snr is under no illusions about the size of the task facing his boy.

“Carl Frampton is a strong boy and undefeated, he’s had six KO’s in nine fights, but we aren’t put off," he said. “Rob has improved a lot in the past year and Frampton hasn’t had a proper test yet.”
